Lil Uzi Vert, the popular American rapper known for his hit mixtape “Luv Is Rage,” is embroiled in a legal battle with his former touring production partner, M99 Studios. The Los Angeles-based creative agency, known for working with celebrities like A$AP Rocky and Thirty Seconds To Mars, filed a lawsuit against Vert on June 12, 2024, in a U.S. District Court in Atlanta. The lawsuit alleges that Vert owes the company over $533,499 for unpaid bills accrued over several years.
A Longstanding Partnership Turns Sour
M99 Studios and Lil Uzi Vert, whose real name is Symere Bysil Woods, have had a working relationship since 2017, the year the creative agency was founded. Over the past seven years, M99 Studios has handled production and staffing for Vert’s live tours and festival appearances. However, according to the lawsuit, the relationship appears to have soured recently.
Accusations of Unpaid Bills and Last-Minute Demands
M99 Studios claims that Vert heavily relied on them for all aspects of his live performances, including creative concepts, production elements, and staffing. The lawsuit alleges that Vert frequently fell behind on payments and that M99 Studios often had to cover financial shortfalls. The company also accuses Vert of having credit card issues that made it difficult to ensure the safety and well-being of the touring crew.
M99 Studios: The “Fixer” Behind the Scenes
The lawsuit paints M99 Studios as the force keeping Vert’s tours running smoothly despite the rapper’s alleged “last-minute” and “unrealistic” requests. One instance cited involves a demand for 30 adult dancers just hours before a performance at Rolling Loud Miami. M99 Studios alleges they fulfilled this request, along with numerous others, at significant expense.
Unpaid Invoices and The Severed Relationship
M99 Studios further claims that Vert and his company, Uzivert LLC, neglected to pay invoices for four performances in 2023, including major festivals like Rolling Loud Miami and Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, Vert’s hometown. Despite repeated requests for payment, M99 Studios alleges they haven’t received any compensation for their services.
The lawsuit also details an Australian tour where M99 Studios decided not to bill Vert in hopes of a peaceful separation. However, the earlier debts from the four American shows remained unpaid, prompting M99 Studios to take legal action. They are seeking a judgment of $533,499, which includes the outstanding bills and the cost of hiring dancers for the Rolling Loud performance.
Lil Uzi Vert’s Response
Lil Uzi Vert has not yet publicly commented on the lawsuit. It remains to be seen how he will respond to these allegations and whether he will attempt to reach a settlement with M99 Studios.
