The 2024 Asian Academy Creative Awards (AACA) has revealed its final winners, and South Korea emerged as a standout in multiple categories. The awards, announced on December 4, honored some of the year’s most remarkable works, including the acclaimed dramas Queen of Tears and Mask Girl.

Queen of Tears: Best Direction (Fiction)

Jang Young Woo and Kim Hee Won secured the award for Best Direction (Fiction) for their work on Queen of Tears, a romantic comedy starring Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won. Released in March 2024, the series has become a monumental success, marking a milestone in tvN’s history by achieving the network’s highest ratings. It also dominated Netflix’s global top 10 for non-English shows.

The drama narrates the journey of Hong Hae In (played by Kim Ji Won) and Baek Hyun Woo (played by Kim Soo Hyun), a married couple struggling to maintain their relationship three years into their marriage. Through a series of heartfelt decisions, the two navigate challenges to rediscover their love and happiness.

Mask Girl: Yeom Hye Ran Wins Best Supporting Actress

Netflix’s Mask Girl also brought home a prestigious award as Yeom Hye Ran was named Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The thriller explores the double life of Kim Mo Mi, an office worker who conceals her insecurities by leading a secret life. Chaos ensues when her dark side is exposed by a colleague.

Yeom Hye Ran portrayed Kim Kyung Ja, the fiercely protective mother of a co-worker who becomes entangled in Kim Mo Mi’s complicated life. Her performance, brimming with intensity and emotion, earned her widespread acclaim and secured her victory in this category.

A Bloody Lucky Day: Best Original Production by a Streamer

Another South Korean hit, A Bloody Lucky Day, clinched the award for Best Original Production by a Streamer (Fiction). Adapted from the popular webtoon, this gripping thriller tells the story of Oh Taek, a taxi driver whose life spirals into chaos after picking up a mysterious passenger—who turns out to be a serial killer.

Lee Sung Min delivered a stellar performance as Oh Taek, captivating audiences with his portrayal of a man caught in a terrifying moral and physical struggle.

South Korea’s Triumph

South Korea stood tall at the 2024 AACA, with these three projects exemplifying the nation’s excellence in storytelling, direction, and performance. The awards continue to highlight the growing influence and creativity of Korean dramas on the global stage.
