Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has surprised many by giving a perfect five-star rating to the small Telugu film Pallaburusu. The director, known for movies like Gangs of Wasseypur and Dev.D, shared his review on Letterboxd and Instagram, calling the film a “refreshing departure” from the action-heavy movies that fill theaters today.
Kashyap’s praise comes at a time when big-budget action films with loud background scores and fast editing rule the box office. His review has created a lot of buzz around this small-budget dramedy that tells a simple story about family relationships.
What Anurag Kashyap Said About Pallaburusu
The acclaimed director did not hold back his appreciation for the film. On Letterboxd, he wrote:
“Beautiful film. So simple, keeps a smile on your face. Such a refreshing departure from all the non stop action films which are replica of each other.”
Kashyap gave the film a full five-star rating, which is rare for any filmmaker to do publicly. He also posted about the movie on Instagram, where he explained why audiences should not miss it.
In his Instagram post, Kashyap wrote:
“I think the title means ‘Toothbrush’ .. the most fun, fascinating, unexpected dramedy from Telugu cinema from @udaychauhandirects. So simple, so engaging, so funny yet so relatable. A father who takes his son to court because he didn’t get him the toothbrush he needed plus the stupid little ego issues.. a film so unmissable. Watch it now or regret it later. No big stars. No BamBam music and edit. Just a lovely film.”
The filmmaker also praised the producers for backing such a unique project, saying, “@annapurnastudios good for you to back it”.
Director Uday Chauhan Gets Big Praise from Kashyap
Along with praising the film, Anurag Kashyap also had high words for debut director Uday Chauhan. He compared Chauhan to filmmaker Venkatesh Maha, who is known for critically acclaimed films like C/o Kancharapalem and Rao Bahadur.
Kashyap wrote:
“After Venky Maha, Uday Chauhan is a filmmaker I look forward to.”
This comparison is significant because Venkatesh Maha is known for making grounded, realistic films that focus on human emotions rather than commercial masala. Kashyap’s words have put Uday Chauhan in the spotlight as a promising new talent in Telugu cinema.
What Is Pallaburusu About?
Pallaburusu, which means “toothbrush” in Telugu, is a family dramedy set in rural Telangana. The story revolves around an elderly father who files a complaint against his adult son at the police station. The reason? His son refuses to buy him a toothbrush.
What starts as a silly complaint soon turns into a full legal battle. As the case moves forward, deeper issues like neglect, loneliness, and ego clashes between the father and son come to the surface. The film shows how small family arguments can reveal bigger emotional wounds.
The film features Sudhakar Reddy as the father and Muralidhar Goud as the son. Other cast members include Gomathy, Prajwal Yadma, and Sujatha in important roles.
The Real Story Behind the Film
Director Uday Chauhan found the idea for Pallaburusu from a real-life moment he witnessed. He told Hindustan Times:
“I saw a 6-foot-tall, 70-year-old man sobbing in the middle of a graveyard in the fields. The image stayed with me for a long time. I wondered what could have happened to make him feel such grief, and that sparked the idea for Pallaburusu.”
Chauhan also mentioned that the film is inspired by things he has observed around him. While the story is relatable, the conflict between the characters is fresh and unexpected.
A Different Kind of Telugu Film
What makes Pallaburusu stand out is its simplicity. The film does not rely on big stars, loud background music, or fancy editing. Instead, it focuses on telling a honest story about everyday people.
The movie is produced by Annapurna Studios and EPIC Studios, and presented by Nagarjuna. It was released in theaters on August 14, just before the Independence Day weekend.
The music for the film is composed by Pawan C, which has also received positive attention.
