Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently stepped out for a dinner with director Imtiaz Ali and close friends in Mumbai. But what grabbed everyone’s attention was not the star-studded gathering but the quirky red T-shirt Kashyap wore. The T-shirt featured the words “dimagi nakal” along with the phrase “been into this since my school days.”
Kashyap shared pictures from the dinner on his social media on August 18, 2026. Alongside the photos, he wrote, “Family dinner and then my t shirt that drew more attention .. t shirt by @yehhaihindicinema.” Within hours, the post went viral, with fans flooding the comment section with their thoughts on the filmmaker’s bold fashion choice.
The Political Connection Behind the T-Shirt
The phrase “dimagi nakal” appears to be a clever play on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent “dimagi naxal” remark. During his Independence Day speech on August 15, PM Modi warned about ‘dimagi naxals’ who he claimed have entrenched themselves in the system and continue to manipulate policies. He urged citizens to ‘identify and isolate’ such people. The Prime Minister also said that while the country had succeeded in removing armed Naxalism from the forests, the ideological supporters of the movement were still seeking opportunities to promote violence and anarchy.
Kashyap’s T-shirt replaced “naxal” with “nakal,” which means copy or imitation in Hindi. The wordplay added another layer of meaning, as “nakal” in Tamil, when spoken with a double ‘k’, also means sarcasm or ridicule. By wearing this T-shirt, Kashyap seemed to take a sarcastic swipe at the political debate without directly mentioning it.
Fans React to the Filmmaker’s Humour
Social media users were quick to appreciate Kashyap’s sense of humour. Many took to the comment section to share their thoughts on the T-shirt.
“I love that t-shirt.. proud to be Dimagi nakal,” joked one fan.
Another follower suggested that Kashyap should turn the idea into a business opportunity.
“Anurag, could you consider start selling merchandise,” wrote another user.
Some fans felt that the director was back to his signature sarcastic style.
“Deliberate use of Dimaag with that Dimaagi T-shirt. Love the sarcasm,” commented one user.
Another follower simply declared, “The T-shirt legit deserves all the attention.”
One user even suggested a follow-up design, writing, “Mast… Next one should read as Andhnamazi.”
The Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Kashyap Reunion
Beyond the T-shirt, fans were equally excited to see Anurag Kashyap and Imtiaz Ali together. The two filmmakers share a friendship that goes back to their university days in Delhi. Recently, they came together professionally as presenters for the short film Bobby Beauty Parlour, which was released on the Oh Short Flips YouTube channel earlier this month.
One comment captured the excitement around their bond:
“Anurag Kashyap calling Imtiaz Ali his family is my Roman Empire,” read a fan’s remark.
Another user expressed happiness at seeing the director in his old form, commenting, “Sir purani form mein wapas agaye hai.”
