Jason Sanjay, the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay, will have to wait a little longer to see his first film as a director reach audiences. The makers of Sigma have officially pushed back the release date, moving the film from its earlier July slot to October 2, 2026. The announcement came through social media, with the production house Lyca Productions sharing a new poster featuring lead actor Sundeep Kishan alongside the fresh date.
The film, which marks Jason Sanjay’s entry into the film industry as a director, was originally scheduled to hit theatres on July 31. However, the team decided to postpone the release after Vijay’s farewell film Jana Nayagan was rescheduled to July 23. With that film now out, the makers have chosen the Gandhi Jayanti weekend to bring Sigma to cinemas worldwide.
New Release Date Confirmed for October 2
Lyca Productions, the banner producing Sigma, took to social media on August 18 to confirm the new date. The post read, “Mark the date for the heist on October 2. SIGMA is all set to light up the screens”. Jason Sanjay also shared the announcement on his Instagram account, building anticipation among fans who have been following the project closely.
The film was earlier expected to arrive on July 31, but that plan changed after Jana Nayagan moved to July 23. Reports suggest that Sigma was initially pushed to August to avoid a clash with Vijay’s film. Now, with the October date locked, the team is moving forward with post-production work and preparing for a theatrical release during the holiday weekend.
What We Know About Sigma
Sigma is described as a high-stakes heist thriller that blends action, comedy, and treasure-hunt elements. Jason Sanjay, who wrote and directed the film, has called it a celebration of the “lone wolf” spirit – a character who chooses his own path instead of following what society expects. The story follows a protagonist who refuses to take the conventional route and sets out on an adventurous hunt for hidden treasures.
The film has been shot across multiple locations, including Chennai, Salem, Thalakona, and Thailand. It is being made simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu, which helps it reach audiences across two major South Indian markets. A special song featuring Sundeep Kishan and Catherine Tresa was also filmed on a large-scale set.
Cast and Crew
Sundeep Kishan plays the lead role in Sigma. The cast also includes Faria Abdullah, Raju Sundaram, Sampath Raj, Shiv Panditt, Anbu Thasan, Yog Japee, Magalakshmi, Sheela Rajkumar, Kamalesh, and Kiran Konda. Kaleel Raja, Sanjeev S, and Ajaiy Ashok have worked on additional screenplay writing.
The technical team brings together experienced professionals. Thaman S has composed the music, while Krishnan Vasant handled cinematography. Praveen KL is the editor, and Venkat and Selva have choreographed the stunts. The film is produced by Subaskaran under the Lyca Productions banner.
First Single Sigma Style Released in June
The promotional campaign for Sigma began with the release of its first single, Sigma Style, in June. Actor Dulquer Salmaan launched the track on his social media handles, sharing both the Telugu and Tamil versions. He wrote, “Happy to launch the first single of SIGMA. Sending my best wishes to dear Jason Sanjay and the entire team for a successful release and an incredible journey ahead”. The song features vocals from Thaman S, Smile Tupakeys, and Mc Rude.

Jason Sanjay’s Journey to Filmmaking
Jason Sanjay, born in 2000, is the only son of Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam. Unlike his father, who became one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, Jason chose to work behind the camera. He studied film production and screenwriting in the United States before deciding to make his debut as a director.
In previous interviews, Jason has spoken about the support he received from his father when he shared his plans to become a filmmaker. He has also revealed that he turned down an acting offer from director Alphonse Puthren, choosing instead to focus on direction. Sundeep Kishan, who worked closely with Jason on Sigma, has praised the young director’s patience and clarity. In an interview with Variety, Sundeep said, “For a 25-year-old to be that patient, calm, and clear about what he wanted while directing was amazing. It was an insight into how the present-day generation looks at film narration”.
Cinematographer Krishnan Vasant also spoke about working with Jason, saying, “There is crazy hype around Sigma, and that is something that I’ve never experienced. But there is no pressure because Jason Sanjay is a sorted guy. Although he comes from a film family, he took the effort to study filmmaking”.
Why the Release Was Postponed
The makers have not officially revealed the reason for the latest delay. However, reports indicate that the initial postponement from July 31 happened because Jana Nayagan, Vijay’s final film, was moved to July 23. With that release now complete, the team has chosen October 2 as the new date for Sigma. The film will now arrive during the Gandhi Jayanti holiday, a period that often sees increased footfall in theatres.
Competition at the Box Office
The October 2 release date puts Sigma in the middle of a busy period for Tamil cinema. Vijay Sethupathi’s Baththa and Lokesh Kanagaraj-presented Mr Bhaarath are also expected to hit screens around that time. Ram’s Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai, starring Nivin Pauly and Soori, is scheduled to release a day earlier on October 1. With multiple films arriving during the same week, Sigma will face strong competition at the box office.
What’s Next for the Film
With the new release date now confirmed, the team is preparing for the final leg of post-production. The film’s promotional campaign is expected to pick up pace as October approaches. Fans of Vijay and followers of Jason Sanjay’s journey are eagerly waiting to see what the young director has created. The film marks an important milestone for Jason, who has spent years studying the craft and working on this project.
Sundeep Kishan, speaking about the film earlier, said, “We are very excited about it. We also realised that Sigma is not just a film but a cultural experience. It is Sanjay’s debut and he has taken a completely alternative route wanting to be director. So we come with that responsibility”.
Sigma is set to release in theatres on October 2, 2026. The film will be available in Tamil and Telugu, with a worldwide theatrical release planned.
