Prime Video has found its new RoboCop. Dan Stevens, known for his roles in Downton Abbey and Legion, will play Alex Murphy in the upcoming television series based on the classic 1987 movie. The news broke on August 25, 2026, and fans of the original film are already showing their support for the casting choice.
Official Casting Announcement Confirms Stevens as Lead
The casting was confirmed by multiple major outlets including Variety and Deadline. Stevens will play both police officer Alex Murphy and his cyborg alter ego RoboCop in the eight-episode series. The project comes from Amazon MGM Studios and James Wan’s Blumhouse Atomic Monster production company.
Peter Ocko serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett also executive produce through Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, who co-created and co-wrote the original 1987 film, will also serve as executive producers.
The official logline for the series states: “A giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer (Stevens)”.
Original Fans React to the Casting Choice
Fans of the original RoboCop franchise have responded positively to Stevens being cast in the lead role. Many have pointed out that Stevens has the right look and acting ability to play the character.
One fan on social media wrote, “I’m like 10x more psyched for this now”. Another fan commented, “Strong lower jaw! Liking this pick!”. The mustache Stevens sports in recent photos has become a talking point among fans. While the character Alex Murphy cannot grow facial hair, fans have noted that Stevens’ mustache somehow makes him the right choice for the role.
The casting has generated excitement because Stevens has built a reputation for playing unusual and interesting characters. One commentator noted that Stevens has “portrayed lots of freaky lil’ weirdos on screen” despite being traditionally handsome.
Stevens’ Career Makes Him a Strong Choice
Stevens broke out with his role as Matthew Crawley in the hit British series Downton Abbey. He later starred in the critically acclaimed FX series Legion, where he played David Haller, the son of Professor X. His other television work includes Solar Opposites, Zero Day, and the upcoming third season of AMC’s The Terror.
In film, Stevens recently appeared in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. He is also known for the live-action Beauty and the Beast, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, and the horror film Cuckoo. He will reunite with director Adam Wingard for Onslaught, set for release on September 4, 2026.
Stevens’ ability to deliver strong performances while wearing heavy makeup or prosthetics has been noted as a key asset for the RoboCop role. His work in The Guest showed he could move beyond aristocratic roles and play darker characters.
The RoboCop Franchise Legacy
The original RoboCop film, directed by Paul Verhoeven, was released in 1987 and starred Peter Weller as Alex Murphy. The film told the story of a Detroit police officer who is killed in the line of duty and rebuilt as a cyborg crime-fighter. It was praised for its satirical take on corporate America.
Weller returned for the sequel in 1990, with Robert Burke taking over the role for RoboCop 3 in 1993. A reboot starring Joel Kinnaman was released in 2014. There have also been multiple RoboCop television shows, including animated and live-action versions, as well as video games and comic books.
The new series has been in development since Amazon acquired MGM in 2022. The project was officially announced in July 2026. Stevens emerged as a leading contender for the role early in the casting process.

Production Team Brings Experience to the Series
The showrunner Peter Ocko has worked on series like Lodge 49 and Pushing Daisies. James Wan, known for directing The Conjuring and Aquaman, brings experience with genre filmmaking to the project.
Amazon MGM Studios’ head of global television, Peter Friedlander, spoke about the series when it was greenlit. He said, “RoboCop is a franchise that has meant something to audiences for nearly four decades — not just as an action spectacle, but as a sharp, provocative mirror of our relationship with technology and power”. He added that Ocko has “crafted a vision that honors the soul of what made the original so enduring while building something entirely fresh and urgent for today”.
The series will consist of eight episodes. A release date has not yet been announced. The project is still in the early stages of development. Danielle Bozzone of Blumhouse Atomic Monster will serve as co-executive producer and oversee the project for the company.
