A brand-new teaser for Marvel Television’s VisionQuest has confirmed what many fans suspected: Ultron is back, and his plan for humanity has taken a chilling turn. The latest footage shows the sentient AI telling Vision he no longer wants to wipe out humans — he wants to control them instead.
The teaser, released ahead of the series premiere on October 14, 2026, on Disney+, gives the clearest look yet at the villain’s new mission. It also sets up an emotional father-son conflict between Ultron and Vision, two characters whose history stretches back to Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015.
What The New Teaser Actually Shows
In the new teaser, Ultron (voiced by James Spader) tells Vision (played by Paul Bettany): “I’m going to finish what I started years ago.” The footage then reveals his updated goal: “control humans without killing them.”
This marks a major shift from the character’s original plan. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, the villain believed he needed to eradicate humanity to save Earth. That plan failed when the Avengers stopped him. Now, he has adjusted his approach — but the threat remains just as serious.
The teaser also includes a tense exchange where Ultron calls Vision “my boy.” Vision rejects the label, saying he is not Ultron’s child. Ultron responds: “Shame. It was the only thing keeping you alive.” The scene ends with the two facing each other in their robotic forms.
Why Vision And Ultron Are Connected
The connection between the two characters goes back to Vision’s creation. Vision was built using part of Ultron’s programming, which makes their relationship complicated. Showrunner Terry Matalas explained that Vision chose not to destroy Ultron at the end of Age of Ultron. Instead, he backed him up — preserving Ultron inside his own mind.
Matalas described the dynamic as a “father-son” relationship. Ultron is the “messed-up father” that Vision has to deal with, while Tommy Shepherd (played by Ruaridh Mollica) serves as the third generation in this unusual family.
The Mindspace Explained
Much of the series takes place inside Vision’s “Mindspace,” an internal world where different AI personas appear in human form. These include J.A.R.V.I.S. (played by James D’Arcy), F.R.I.D.A.Y. (played by Orla Brady), E.D.I.T.H. (played by Emily Hampshire), and Ultron himself.
Showrunner Terry Matalas said Ultron has changed during his time locked inside Vision’s mind. “Ultron’s not quite the guy he used to be; he’s come around a little bit on humanity, he’s trying to understand us,” Matalas explained. “He’s devoured our culture and art, and has a better perspective on humanity than even Vision does.”

Showrunner On The AI Theme
Terry Matalas noted that the show deals directly with the rise of artificial intelligence. In the real world, AI has become a major topic of discussion, and VisionQuest puts these concerns at the center of its story in creative ways.
Paul Bettany spoke about working with James Spader again. “It was really early on. Terry called me up and said, ‘How about James Spader?’ And I was like, ‘That’s exactly it,’” Bettany recalled. “I hadn’t thought of it, but it’s great because then you can do the sort of intergenerational digital damage.”
The actor also shared a lighter moment from the set. “James showed up with this beard, and everybody called him Weirdy Beardy haha! He started off with this kind of Karl Marx beard, grew into a sort of Isambard Kingdom Brunel beard!”
