Batman has always been the guy in the Justice League with no superpowers, just a utility belt and a whole lot of preparation. But 2026 is proving to be a different kind of year for the Dark Knight. Across comics and the growing DC Universe, Bruce Wayne is now carrying weapons built from New Gods technology, gadgets that can threaten beings as powerful as Superman, and the DCU is quietly bringing Jack Kirby’s Fourth World mythology back into the fold. From a shrunken dwarf star hidden in a pill to traffic bollards installed across Gotham City, here is everything that has happened with Batman’s latest tech and the New Gods in the DC Universe so far.
Batman Now Carries a Miniaturized Dwarf Star in His Pocket
The most dangerous gadget in Batman’s arsenal right now is not a Batarang or a grapnel gun. It is a tiny pill containing the heart of a shrunken dwarf star, and Batman can expand it at any moment to burn his target “from the inside out with the heat of a thousand tiny suns.” This weapon made its debut in DC’s 2026 Detective Comics Annual, written by Tom Taylor with art by Dave Wielgosz and Nicola Scott.
The issue sees Batman cross paths with Lobo, the Czarnian bounty hunter who has been sent to hunt down the Dark Knight after Batman is falsely accused of assassinating an extraterrestrial king. Lobo thinks he is playing with an easy target until Batman throws the pill into his mouth and delivers the threat. The weapon is so powerful that it could endanger the lives of fellow heroes as strong as Superman and Wonder Woman, which is why Batman keeps it hidden and uses it only as a last resort.
This is not the first time Batman has used New Gods technology in a weapon. In an earlier story, he pulled out a gun made from three quadrillion watts of New Genesis steel while facing the villain Failsafe. The pattern is clear: Batman has been quietly building a stockpile of tools designed for fights that normal human beings should not survive.
Gotham City Itself Is Now a Batman Gadget
Batman’s newest gadget is not something he carries. It is something he installed into the city. In Batman #9, part of the ongoing run by writer Matt Fraction and artist Jorge Jiménez, the Bat-Family activates what are called Bat-Bollards—traffic bollards hidden throughout Gotham that can rise up to stop vehicles in their tracks.
The Bat-Bollards were used to stop a TUCO squad truck that was chasing Duke Thomas, also known as The Signal. The scene even riffs on the famous “They fly now!?” line from Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. It is a reminder that Batman does not just prepare himself for every scenario. He prepares the entire city.
The Fraction and Jiménez run has been full of inventive gadgets. Batman’s Spectrolens function like an upgraded version of the Detective Vision from the Batman: Arkham games, and the Bat-Reel is described as a ridiculously overpowered grappling hook. Between the Bat-Wing, Batspikes, and Batsnares, a gadget exists for virtually any possible situation.
DCU Is Bringing the New Gods Back for Real
The New Gods are not just showing up in Batman’s comic book gadgets. The DC Universe is actively building toward the Fourth World mythology that Jack Kirby created in the 1970s. The New Gods are an extraterrestrial team of god-like beings from the twin planets Apokolips and New Genesis, and they were originally set to headline their own film in the old DCEU, developed by Ava DuVernay and Tom King.
That film was shelved in 2021, but the New Gods found a new path into the DCU through an animated Mister Miracle series. James Gunn confirmed on Threads in January 2026 that Mister Miracle would be “seen in our DCU,” making it part of the main DC Universe rather than an Elseworlds side project. Tom King is writing every episode of the series and has confirmed that Darkseid, Orion, and Barda will appear alongside the titular character.
“I can quote James Gunn from Instagram, at least I can confirm that he said this morning that Mister Miracle is a DCU show. Which, you know, has huge implications for our show and the DCU at large… We got to cast Darkseid, we got to cast Orion, and obviously, Scott and Barda were the big ones.”
Nathan Fillion will reprise his role as Green Lantern Guy Gardner in the Mister Miracle animated series, making him the only actor confirmed for the show so far. The series has no release date yet, but production is underway.
Gotham’s Shadow Falls on the DCU’s Next Movie
Batman himself will not appear in the DCU’s next theatrical release, Clayface, but his presence will be felt throughout the film. Director James Watkins explained that the movie’s Gotham City is designed to feel like a place that desperately needs a protector.
“We want the world to be corrupt. We want it to be a city where litter doesn’t get picked up, where there’s a sense of decay, where there’s dirt, where the canyons of these places are overbearing. You’re in a city called Gotham. So I guess you feel the shadow of the Bat inherently. Because of the nature of where you are.”
Clayface centers on Matt Hagen, one of Batman’s most powerful villains, played by Tom Rhys Harries in live-action for the first time. The R-rated horror film explores how Hagen goes from a rising star to a shape-shifting monster. The movie hits theaters in North America on October 23, 2026, and internationally beginning October 21, 2026.
Watkins drew inspiration from 1980s and 1990s street photography, including a documentary called Everybody Street, to capture the “bawdy glamor of New York, slightly edgy, slightly eccentric, slightly menacing, richly saturated colors” that defines this version of Gotham.
Batman Is Still Being Set Up Across the DCU
Even without a solo film yet, Batman’s presence has been woven into multiple DCU projects. The HBO series Lanterns revealed that Sheriff Kerry Kane previously lived in Gotham City before leaving after a criminal organization killed her father. The show also confirmed that Kerry is a member of the Kane family, a prominent name in Gotham’s comic book history.
James Gunn has made it clear that Batman and other heroes are already active in the DCU continuity. Clayface takes place before the events of Creature Commandos season 1, meaning Batman is already operating as a vigilante during the film’s timeline. The DCU’s Chapter One slate is called “Gods and Monsters”, and the New Gods mythology is now officially part of that plan.

What the New Gods Bring to Batman’s World
The New Gods technology that Batman is using in the comics is not just fancy sci-fi gear. Mother Boxes are sentient supercomputers that bond to their owners and serve as multifunction tools, data sources, and medical kits. Boom Tubes are portals that allow for faster-than-light travel across the universe, and they can only be generated by Mother Boxes.
Batman acquiring his own customized Mother Box in Batman #152 in 2024 marked a shift in how the character operates. He is no longer just a man with a utility belt. He is a man with tools that can go head-to-head with the forces of Apokolips.
“There will be more New Gods.”
That is what writer Ram V said after his New Gods series ended with its twelfth issue. Ram V’s run, drawn by Evan Cagle, reimagined Jack Kirby’s Fourth World universe for a new generation. The second volume, New Gods Vol. 2: Edge of Darkness, was published on March 24, 2026, and collects issues #7-12. The story follows the New Gods after they flee their home planet of New Genesis and become stranded on Earth, where they work alongside the Justice League Unlimited.
