In a recent development, Yongsan Police have announced the closure of the investigation into BTS’ SUGA for driving under the influence (DUI). The case, which gained significant public attention, involves the rapper being stopped on August 6, 2024, for riding an electric scooter while intoxicated. As of August 26, 2024, TV Chosun reported that the police plan to forward SUGA’s case to prosecutors within the week.

Investigation Details and Police Update

Yongsan Police revealed that after thorough inquiry, they found no need for further investigation into the incident. The authorities clarified that SUGA’s seated scooter, which he was operating at the time, does not require a license plate, effectively addressing and resolving any related controversy.

SUGA’s Apologies and Legal Representation

On August 23, 2024, SUGA attended questioning at Yongsan Police Station. During this visit, he publicly bowed to the media and issued a heartfelt apology for his actions. He also took to Weverse, a platform he often uses to communicate with his fans, to express his remorse and commitment to being more responsible in the future.

It’s worth noting that SUGA’s legal representation in this case is being handled by the same lawyer who previously represented Kangin, a former member of Super Junior, in a DUI case in 2016. Kangin was fined 7 million KRW for crashing into a streetlight while intoxicated. This lawyer is known for specializing in criminal cases within the entertainment industry.

Case Summary and Consequences

BTS’ SUGA was officially charged by the Yongsan Police Station for violating the Road Traffic Act. His license was revoked, and he was fined for his actions. SUGA admitted to the charges and acknowledged his lack of awareness regarding the laws surrounding electric scooters. Despite this, he took full responsibility and expressed deep regret to his fans.

SUGA began his mandatory military service as a public service worker on September 22, 2023, and is expected to be discharged in June 2025. Before enlisting, he released his debut solo album under the name Agust D on April 21, 2023. Currently, he is serving at a social service center, where he works from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and returns home after his shift.
