In a recent interview with Allure Korea, actor Kim Young Dae opened up about his journey as an actor, his upcoming projects, and his personal goals for the future. The interview gives a deeper look at the actor’s mindset as he continues to build an impressive career.
Reflecting on His Recent Drama
Kim Young Dae recently appeared in the drama “No Gain No Love“, and he shared how he keeps up with his own performances. Although filming for his upcoming drama “Dear X” overlapped with the airing of his previous project, he still found time to watch reruns. “I managed to catch the initial broadcasts up to episode 6, but then the filming for ‘Dear X’ started, so after work, I would watch the reruns,” said Kim.
When asked if he monitors his own work, the actor confirmed, “Yes, I do. Even though I always find things that leave me unsatisfied, I still make sure to watch.” He admitted that he often feels disappointed with his performances, explaining that it’s difficult to revisit a character once the filming is over. “I feel sad that I won’t get another chance to revisit the character,” he revealed.
Learning Life Lessons from Characters
The actor spoke about his character Ji Wook from “No Gain No Love,” explaining that he learned a sense of calmness through the role. “I learned calmness. If life is like the ocean, there are countless waves. The person named Kim Young Dae gets shaken by those waves, reacting to every up and down, but Ji Wook is more steadfast,” Kim said, expressing admiration for his character’s ability to stay composed through life’s challenges.
While Kim mentioned that his personal decision-making process tends to be more spontaneous, he emphasized that he is someone who quickly moves on from setbacks. “I tend to forget things quickly rather than dwell on them. I might be in pain, suffer, and feel sad for a moment, but after a few days, I start to see things to be grateful for, and I find joy again,” he said, discussing his positive outlook on life.
Discussing His Career Progression
Kim Young Dae has been steadily building his acting career since his debut in 2017, and he reflected on how important experience is to his growth. “There’s nothing as certain as experience. I never hesitated or turned down any acting opportunities,” he said, emphasizing the importance of embracing every chance to act, especially in his 20s.
Looking ahead to his 30s, Kim is focusing on finding peace of mind. “I hope to have fewer emotional ups and downs and find more peace of mind. I have a clear vision of the kind of career and life I want, and someday, I hope to speak about it with confidence,” the actor shared.
Upcoming Drama “Dear X”
Kim Young Dae will next be seen in the drama “Dear X”, where he plays the role of Yoon Joon Seo. The character is described as a “guardian angel” to Baek Ah Jin, played by Kim Yoo Jung, in a complex story directed by Lee Eung Bok. Speaking about his character, Kim said, “The story revolves around Baek Ah Jin. Joon Seo is like a ‘guardian angel’ in her life, amidst all the tough men surrounding her.”
Kim is excited about the new direction the director is taking with the drama, adding that viewers can expect something different.
Personal Goals for the Future
Reflecting on his goals, Kim shared that he wants to get back into reading and take better care of his mental and emotional health. “I want to detox my mind and spirit. In my early 20s, I loved reading and did it often, but these days, I just end up watching Reels when I could be reading,” he admitted.
For 2025, Kim hopes to break some unhealthy habits, including binge-watching and overeating. “I want to resist the impulse to make unhealthy choices as a way of dealing with stress,” he concluded.
Kim Young Dae’s full interview and pictorial will be featured in the November issue of Allure Korea.
