How Madame Web Changed Sydney Sweeney’s View of Spiders

Loading

The Marvel movie Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, has been released in theatres, but it has received mixed reviews from the fans and critics. The film introduces a new team of young superwomen with spider-themed powers, who are connected by Cassandra Webb (Johnson), a paramedic who can see the future. Sweeney plays Julia Cornwall, also known as Spider-Woman or the second Madame Web, who has abilities similar to Spider-Man. In a recent interview, Sweeney revealed how her role in the film made her more compassionate towards the spiders, and shared a funny anecdote from the set of Anyone But You, where she was bitten by a trained spider.

Sydney Sweeney can’t kill a spider anymore

Sydney Sweeney, who is also known for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, said that playing Julia Cornwall in Madame Web changed her perception of the spiders. She said that before the film, she might have killed a few spiders, but now she feels like she is one with them. She said, “I definitely feel like I can’t kill a spider anymore. Prior to the film, there might have been a few slaps. Now we are one.”

Sydney Sweeney also said that she learned a lot about the spiders and their importance for the environment while preparing for the film. She said, “They’re actually really fascinating creatures, and they do a lot of good for the world. They eat a lot of pests, and they help with the ecosystem. They’re not as scary as they seem.”

Sweeney’s real-life Spider-Woman moment

Sydney Sweeney also shared a hilarious story from the set of Anyone But You, a romantic comedy where she starred opposite Glen Powell. She said that while filming a scene where she had to hold a Huntsman spider, the spider started biting her. She said, “What was really funny was when that happened [the spider bite in Anyone But You], the medic wrote ‘Sydney Sweeney gets bit by a spider and turns into Spider-Woman’ just as like a funny note… and no one had any clue that we were doing this film or what the film was, so I was like can I take a picture of that, just for myself to have that one day.”

Sydney Sweeney also revealed that the medic unknowingly called her Spider-Woman, which was a coincidence since she was playing that character in Madame Web. She said, “He was like, ‘Are you okay, Spider-Woman?’ And I was like, ‘How do you know that?’ And he was like, ‘What do you mean?’ And I was like, ‘Never mind.’”

She said that she was not allowed to talk about Madame Web at that time, as it was a secret project. She said, “It was very hush-hush. We couldn’t say anything about it. It was very exciting to be part of something so big and so secretive.”

Madame Web receives mixed response from the fans

Madame Web, which is a spin-off of Spider-Man, is set in an unspecified universe, where Cassandra Webb recruits Julia Cornwall, Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced) as various spider-themed heroes. The film is directed by S.J. Clarkson, who is the first female director to helm a Marvel movie. The film is based on the comic book character of Madame Web, who is a paralysed, elderly woman with psychic powers, who helps Spider-Man and his allies.

The film has received mixed response from the fans and critics, who have praised the performances of Johnson and Sweeney, but have criticised the script, the plot, and the lack of connection to the Spider-Man universe. Some fans have also expressed their disappointment that the film did not feature any of the Spider-Men, such as Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, or Andrew Garfield, who have appeared in the previous films. Some fans have also suggested that the film should have been called Spider Ma’am instead of Madame Web.

However, some fans have also shown their support for the film, and have appreciated the female-led superhero team. Some fans have also expressed their hope that Madame Web will lead to more crossover events and appearances of other spider-characters in the future.
