In a recent conversation, directors Denis Villeneuve and Luca Guadagnino shared their thoughts on the growth of actors Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya between their roles in their respective films. Speaking on Variety’s Directors on Directors, the two filmmakers reflected on how these talented stars have evolved since they first worked with them.
Villeneuve’s Thoughts on Chalamet
Villeneuve, known for his work on Blade Runner 2049 and Dune, began by praising Luca Guadagnino for casting Timothée Chalamet in the 2017 film Call Me by Your Name. Villeneuve credited this performance as the moment he first took note of Chalamet’s potential and decided to cast him as Paul Atreides in his Dune film series.
“There was something about that intelligence that I saw in his eyes and the maturity in that youth that you captured,” Villeneuve shared. He went on to describe Chalamet as being somewhat inexperienced when it came to working on films of such a large scale. When the actor first joined the Dune cast, Villeneuve recalled how he felt the need to “protect and take care of” Chalamet, who was younger and still finding his place in the industry.
However, Villeneuve noticed a significant shift when Chalamet returned for Dune: Part Two. The actor, who had already starred in films like Beautiful Boy and Bones and All, had matured both personally and professionally. “He had grown up,” Villeneuve said, noting the change in his approach to the role of Paul Atreides.
Guadagnino on Zendaya’s Growth
Luca Guadagnino, acclaimed for films like Call Me by Your Name and Bones and All, also shared his thoughts on Zendaya, who had starred in his 2024 movie Challengers. In addition to her role as Chani in the Dune series, Zendaya has gained recognition for her diverse performances across various genres.
Guadagnino praised Zendaya for her versatility and boldness in tackling a wide range of characters. In Challengers, she portrayed Tashi Donaldson, a former tennis player and coach, which showcased a different side of her talent compared to her role in Dune.
“I was surprised by the way she portrayed her other side on screen,” Guadagnino remarked. He further commended Zendaya for her fearlessness in choosing roles and how she effortlessly captivates the audience with her performances.
Both directors highlighted Zendaya’s ability to immerse herself in every role she takes on, no matter how different it may be from her previous work.
Their Influence on the Stars
Both Villeneuve and Guadagnino agreed that Chalamet and Zendaya have become powerful forces in the entertainment industry, demonstrating a significant evolution in their acting careers. From their first roles to their current performances, the growth of both actors has been remarkable, and they continue to impress audiences with their talents.
