Popular South Korean actor, Son Suk Ku, has become a topic of discussion after it was revealed that he turned down roles in both seasons of the hit Netflix series “Squid Game.”
Season 1 Rejection
A source close to Son Suk Ku informed Newsen that he received an offer to play the role of Sangwoo, which was eventually portrayed by Park Hae Soo, during his time with his previous agency. After careful consideration, Son Suk Ku decided to decline the role.
The source explained that at the time, Son Suk Ku and his agency were interested in the series but had no idea it would become a global phenomenon.
“I would be lying if I said I had no regrets after the first season became a worldwide hit, but I remember thinking there was an actor for every role.”
Season 2 Rejection
The source also addressed the reason why Son Suk Ku did not appear in the second season. They stated that while he was willing to participate, the main cast had already been mostly decided after he received the script.
“Although he had every intention to appear, after receiving the script, the main roles had already been somewhat confirmed. Since the cast lineup for actors Im Siwan and Kang Haneul had already been confirmed, there were concerns and differing opinions about the amount of screen time and the main plot. He was also scheduled to film for the Disney+ drama Casino.”
This scheduling conflict with the filming of Casino also contributed to his decision not to join “Squid Game” Season 2.
Son Suk Ku’s Thoughts on the Series
In 2022, Son Suk Ku shared his thoughts on “Squid Game” on a variety show. He praised the show’s fresh perspective.
“From a director’s perspective, the show feels very fresh. Unlike the typical death game of killing each other, it was touching to see a setting of forming teams and working together.”
Despite the show’s global popularity, some viewers have chosen not to watch it due to its cast.
