Reese Witherspoon is actively developing a prequel series to her iconic 2001 film, “Legally Blonde.” Titled “Elle,” the series will explore the high school years of Elle Woods, offering viewers a glimpse into the experiences that shaped her into the beloved character they know.
Witherspoon’s Inspiration and Project Details
Witherspoon recently shared her inspiration for the prequel on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” She mentioned that watching Jenna Ortega’s performance in “Wednesday” sparked the idea of exploring Elle Woods’ high school days. “I wanted to see who she was before college, before law school, and I started having all these ideas,” Witherspoon explained.
Witherspoon is involved in the project as an executive producer through her Hello Sunshine company. The series’ script comes from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the creators of the popular teen drama “Gossip Girl.” “Elle” is currently in development with Amazon MGM Studios. The official logline for the series states, “Elle follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film.”
Casting Updates and Release Timeline
While the cast is yet to be finalized, Witherspoon hinted at the talented young actors auditioning for roles. “I just love them all so much and they’re doing such a good job,” she told Jimmy Fallon, emphasizing the difficulty of choosing the right person to portray the young Elle Woods. Witherspoon described the audition process as “fun.”
Production for “Elle” is scheduled to begin in March 2025, as confirmed by Witherspoon. Although the exact release date remains undisclosed, the series is expected to premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video sometime in 2025.
