The upcoming Australian series The Last Anniversary has released its first trailer, featuring Teresa Palmer as Sophie Honeywell, a woman who inherits a house on the enigmatic Scribbly Gum Island. The show is set to premiere on March 27 on Binge.

Familiar Faces in a Gripping Story

Joining Palmer are notable cast members including Miranda Richardson, Danielle Macdonald, Helen Thomson, Susan Prior, Claude Scott-Mitchell, Charlie Garber, Uli Latukefu, and Jeremy Lindsay Taylor. The series is produced by Nicole Kidman‘s Blossom Films and Bruna Papandrea‘s Made Up Stories, reuniting the team behind Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers.

What the Trailer Reveals

In the newly released trailer, Sophie Honeywell receives an unexpected inheritance from her ex-boyfriend’s great-aunt Connie. Connie’s message hints at family tensions, saying, “My family will behave like vultures when they realize I’ve left my all to a relative stranger, but I need someone joyful in my house.”

Sophie’s arrival at Scribbly Gum Island is met with hostility from the locals. As she adjusts to her new life, secrets about the island start to unfold. One humorous scene at a dinner table features Danielle Macdonald teasing Sophie, calling her a “Forty-year-old Nancy Drew,” to which Palmer responds, “Thirty-nine.” The lighthearted banter sets the tone for a show that balances mystery with comedy.

Filming and Production

Filming took place in Sydney and the Hawkesbury River, staying true to the novel’s Australian setting. The New South Wales government supported the production through the Made in NSW Fund. Binge is the official distributor in Australia, while the BBC has secured UK rights. Sundance Now, part of AMC Networks, will distribute the series in the U.S., giving it global reach.

A Foxtel Group spokesperson commented on the series:

“This wonderfully crafted series takes us to the water, to the bush, and brings new corners of Australia to the screen. We’re looking forward to all our audiences escaping with us to Scribbly Gum Island.”

Creative Team and Future Potential

With Liane Moriarty’s reputation for compelling stories, The Last Anniversary is already generating interest among fans of her previous works. This marks the first of her novels to be set entirely in Australia, adding an authentic touch to the series. Executive producers include Bruna Papandrea, Jodi Matterson, Steve Hutensky, Casey Haver, Samantha Strauss, John Polson, and Moriarty herself.
