Two of South Korea’s biggest stars, Song Hye Kyo and Gong Yoo, are joining forces for a new Netflix series, “Show Business” (working title). This period drama, set against the backdrop of the Korean entertainment industry from the 1960s to 1980s, promises a compelling story of ambition, hardship, and resilience.
A Stellar Team Behind the Scenes
The series boasts an impressive creative team. Acclaimed screenwriter Noh Hee Kyung, known for hits like “Our Blues,” “Dear My Friends,” “It’s Okay, That’s Love,” and “That Winter, the Wind Blows,” has penned the script. Adding to the excitement, Lee Yoon Jung, the director behind popular dramas such as “Coffee Prince,” “Cheese in the Trap,” and “Heart to Heart,” will be at the helm.
The Characters and Their Stories
Song Hye Kyo, who has captivated audiences with her performances in “The Glory,” “Encounter,” and “Descendants of the Sun,” will play Min Ja. Min Ja is a resilient woman who overcomes a difficult childhood and takes risks to pursue her dreams in the Korean music industry. This marks Song Hye Kyo’s third project with Noh Hee Kyung.
Gong Yoo, known for his impactful roles in “Goblin,” “Train to Busan,” and “The Silent Sea,” will portray Dong Gu, Min Ja’s childhood friend. Dong Gu is a loyal character who supports Min Ja through thick and thin as they navigate the challenges of the music scene. This project also marks Gong Yoo’s reunion with director Lee Yoon Jung since their successful collaboration on “Coffee Prince.”
Kim Seol Hyun joins the cast as Min Hee, Min Ja’s friend with whom she shares a complex, love-hate relationship. Cha Seung Won, recognized for his charismatic presence in “Night in Paradise” and “Believer 2,” will play Gil Yeo, a legendary composer who shaped the careers of many successful singers. Lee Ha Nee will portray Yang Ja, Min Hee’s mother, a determined woman who strives to become a singer despite facing financial difficulties and harsh realities.
