Rakul Preet Singh has spoken out about the recent social media buzz surrounding Virat Kohli and his accidental Instagram like on actress Avneet Kaur’s photo. The actress called the controversy “sad” and unnecessary, questioning why such small actions become national news.

During an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, Rakul expressed her admiration for Virat Kohli and his wife, Anushka Sharma, calling them an inspiring couple. She also criticized the excessive attention given to Virat’s social media activity.

“We are so jobless that we even know that his one like increased 2 million followers for the girl (Avneet Kaur). How does it matter? It’s so sad that it became news.”

The controversy started when fans noticed Virat Kohli had liked one of Avneet Kaur’s photos. Screenshots went viral, leading to jokes and speculation. Some users even tagged Anushka Sharma in the comments. Kohli later clarified that the like was accidental, blaming it on an Instagram algorithm glitch.

“I’d like to clarify that while clearing my feed, it appears the algorithm may have mistakenly registered an interaction. There was absolutely no intent behind it. I request that no unnecessary assumptions be made. Thank you for your understanding.”

Despite his explanation, the incident continued to trend online. Rakul Preet Singh defended Kohli, saying celebrities face constant scrutiny. She added that people evolve over time and should not be judged for past behavior.

“A person evolves and changes over time. He might be a rebel back then, but now he is a changed man, maybe because he wants to change. Who are we to assume that initially he was very expressive and now he is forced to issue statements for a single like?”

Avneet Kaur’s Instagram following reportedly grew by 2 million after Kohli’s like. Marketing experts noted that her sponsored post value increased from ₹2 lakh to ₹2.6 lakh due to the extra visibility.

Rakul also praised Virat and Anushka as a couple, saying the whole nation looks up to them.

“The couple I am extremely inspired by is Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli. I think the entire nation is inspired by them.”

Meanwhile, singer Rahul Vaidya mocked the situation, joking about being blocked by Kohli on Instagram.

“Guys, Virat Kohli has blocked me, you all know. So I think voh bhi Instagram ki glitch hogi. Voh Virat Kohli ne block nahi kiya hoga. Instagram ke algorithm ne bola hoga Virat Kohli ko, ‘Ek kaam kar, main tere behalf pe Rahul Vaidya ko block kar deti hoon.’ Haina?”

Kohli’s fans reacted strongly, leading Rahul to call them “jokers” in an Instagram story.

“Virat Kohli’s fans are even bigger jokers than Virat.”

The cricketer has since moved on, focusing on the IPL 2025 season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The team is performing well, currently tied at the top of the points table with Mumbai Indians.
