“Bride Hard,” a new action-comedy starring Rebel Wilson, is set to arrive in cinemas this summer, promising a blend of humor and high-octane thrills. The movie puts a twist on the usual wedding comedy by turning the maid of honor into a secret agent. The film will be released nationwide on June 20, 2025, distributed by Magenta Light Studios.

The movie, directed by Simon West, known for films like “The Expendables 2” and “Con Air,” features Rebel Wilson as Sam, a highly skilled secret agent. Sam faces her most personal assignment yet: being the maid of honor for her best friend, Betsy, played by Anna Camp. The celebrations take an unexpected turn when armed mercenaries disrupt the wedding and take the guests hostage. Sam must then act to neutralize the threats while keeping her secret identity hidden and ensuring the wedding day continues as planned.

The premise sees Sam, a world-class secret agent, as a somewhat disorganized maid of honor. She often prioritizes international spy missions over her bridal duties. After skipping out on bachelorette party arrangements for a mission, she finds herself demoted to bridesmaid status at her friend’s wedding. However, this demotion provides a chance for her to prove herself when the ceremony is crashed by armed mercenaries.

The film has an ensemble cast that includes Anna Chlumsky, known from “Inventing Anna” and “Veep,” along with Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph from “The Holdovers.” Other cast members are Gigi Zumbado, Stephen Dorff from “True Detective,” and Justin Hartley from “Tracker” and “This Is Us.” This diverse group of actors contributes to the film’s comedic and action elements.

The movie’s production budget is reported to be $75,000,000. Principal photography started in July 2023 in Savannah, Georgia, and finished in August 2023. During filming, Rebel Wilson experienced an accident where she was hit in the face with a gun butt during a fight scene, which required stitches. She later confirmed that she had to get plastic surgery to prevent disfigurement.

Rebel Wilson has spoken about the accident, describing it as a “freak accident” that happened on the last night of shooting a fight sequence. She explained that her nose was split open, resulting in a pool of blood. An ambulance was called, and a plastic surgeon was brought in to perform the necessary stitches. Wilson stated that, fortunately, one cannot tell there was an injury now.

The film is a collaboration between WME Independent, Copper Island Films, and Latigo Films. Bob Yari, the head of Magenta Light Studios, has commented on the project, saying that “Bride Hard” is “packed with comedy and high-energy thrills” and will surely entertain anyone who has ever attended a wedding. Joel David Moore, Colleen Camp, Cassian Elwes, Max Osswald, and Jason Ross Jallet serve as producers.

Rebel Wilson herself expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting the unusual combination of her and director Simon West. She believes that their collaboration creates a uniquely fun experience for audiences to see on the big screen. The film has a runtime of 105 minutes and is rated R for sexual references and some violence.

The action-comedy genre allows for creative fight sequences that incorporate wedding-related items. Reports suggest scenes where hairspray is used in the eyes, curling irons cause burns, and even an hors d’oeuvres platter punctures a bad guy’s chest. Champagne bottles are also used as weapons. Such inventive combat helps to set the film apart within the action-comedy space.

The concept of a secret agent acting as a maid of honor offers many comedic possibilities. The contrast between Sam’s professional spy life and her personal struggle with friendship duties is a core part of the story. Her mission to save her best friend’s wedding becomes both a physical challenge and a test of their bond. The narrative focuses on Sam’s journey to prove herself as a good friend while taking down threats.

The film’s international release dates are varied. It will premiere in South Africa on June 20, 2025, followed by Russia (CIS) on June 26, 2025. Slovakia and the United Arab Emirates will see the film on July 3, 2025, and New Zealand on July 10, 2025. Australia will get the film on July 17, 2025, and Germany on August 28, 2025.
