James Gunn has revealed key details about how Peacemaker season 2 fits into the DC Universe (DCU) and its direct connection to the Superman movie. The new season will premiere on August 21, 2025, on HBO Max and will play a major role in shaping the future of the DCU.

Peacemaker Season 2 Continues After Superman

Peacemaker season 2 takes place just one month after the events of the 2025 Superman movie. James Gunn confirmed that the show is a direct follow-up to the film, with several characters from Superman appearing in the series.

“Superman leads directly into Peacemaker; it should be noted that this is for adults, not for children, but Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, itโ€™s incredibly important,” Gunn said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The season will feature appearances from Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn), and Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), all of whom were introduced in Superman.

How Peacemaker Season 2 Sets Up the DCU

Gunn explained that Peacemaker season 2 will help establish the broader DCU by clarifying which parts of the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) are still canon. While most of Peacemaker season 1 remains part of the continuity, some elementsโ€”like cameos in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Adamโ€”are being ignored.

“There are certain things from the old universe that we refer to in Peacemaker season 2, but until then, theyโ€™re not canon. Almost everything from season 1 is canon, but season 2 will explain everything that is or is not canon,” Gunn told Den of Geeks.

The season introduces the Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC), a device that allows travel between alternate realities. This concept will help explain some of the changes between the old DCEU and the new DCU.

John Cena on Peacemakerโ€™s Role in the DCU

John Cena, who plays Christopher Smith / Peacemaker, said the new season will further connect the DCU.

“Instead of standalone properties, all of the DCU is now connected, as you saw Peacemaker show up in Superman. I think what you see in season two is just a forward of that narrative. That whole DCU throughlineโ€”it takes the 11th Street Kids through their next adventure, but it also has a lot to do with the DCU going forward,” Cena explained.

The season will explore Peacemakerโ€™s moral struggles and his evolving role in the DCU, including conflicts with Rick Flag Sr., who seeks revenge for his sonโ€™s death in The Suicide Squad.

James Gunnโ€™s Future Plans for the DCU

Gunn has already finished writing the treatment for the next part of the Superman Saga, hinting at more interconnected stories in the DCU.

“Iโ€™ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what Iโ€™ll call the โ€˜Superman Saga.โ€™ The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked-out treatment. Iโ€™m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today,” Gunn revealed.

While he hasnโ€™t confirmed if Peacemaker will get a movie, Gunn teased that the characterโ€™s future in the DCU is not limited to TV.

What to Expect in Peacemaker Season 2

The new season will bring back the fan-favorite opening dance sequence, along with more chaotic action and dark humor. The story will involve parallel universes, with Peacemaker encountering an alternate version of himself who is a celebrated hero.

Other returning characters include Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, and Steve Agee as John Economos.

Peacemaker season 2 premieres on August 21, 2025, exclusively on HBO Max.
