Famke Janssen, who played Jean Grey in the original X-Men films, has shared her thoughts on not returning for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, despite the return of many of her former co-stars. The actress stated she does not know the storyline for the film and is excited to discover it as an audience member.
The Returning X-Men Cast
Avengers: Doomsday is set to bring together a massive ensemble of heroes from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe to face a new threat, Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Among the teams uniting for the battle is a group of mutants from the 20th Century Fox X-Men films.
The confirmed returning X-Men cast includes Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. Channing Tatum will also finally make his debut as Gambit.
Notably absent from this lineup are several other key mutants from the original film series, including Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Halle Berry’s Storm, Anna Paquin’s Rogue, Shawn Ashmore’s Iceman, and Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey.
Janssen’s Reaction to the News
In a recent interview, Famke Janssen was asked about her absence from the Avengers: Doomsday cast. She revealed she has no inside knowledge about the film’s plot or the reasons for her character’s exclusion.
“Yeah, to be honest with you, I donโt really know the storyline, so Iโm not sure,” Janssen said. “Itโs not my world, itโs never been my world, really, that whole comic book world. I should know by now, Iโve been in it long enough. But Iโm really excited to see when it comes out. Just like everyone else, Iโll find out what those storylines are and how it all ended up.”
When reflecting on her time in the X-Men franchise, which she last appeared in during X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014, Janssen expressed gratitude for the experience but highlighted her preference for variety in her acting roles.
“Those were great films to be part of, and theyโve done so many good things for my career. Itโs just amazing that over all these years, Iโve had these franchisesโฆ Iโm really not good at repeating anything.”
Fan Speculation and Possible Surprises
The announcement of the X-Men team for Avengers: Doomsday has left some fans wondering if more surprises are in store. The absence of major characters like Jean Grey, Storm, and Wolverine has led to speculation on fan forums that Marvel Studios might be saving some appearances for a later announcement or as a surprise for the film itself.
Marvel is known for its secrecy, and with reports that the film’s directors, the Russo Brothers, are planning additional reshoots, there is always a possibility that more familiar faces could be added. The Russos have previously used creative filming techniques to include actors with busy schedules in their past Avengers films.
A Glimpse at Avengers: Doomsday
Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The screenplay is written by Stephen McFeely, with additional script work by Michael Waldron.
The film features an unprecedented crossover of MCU heroes, including Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, and Letitia Wright’s Shuri, alongside the Fantastic Four, led by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards and Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm.
The movie is currently in production and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. It will be followed by its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, on December 17, 2027.
