Fans of the cult horror classic Jennifer’s Body have a real reason to celebrate. Director Karyn Kusama has confirmed that a sequel is officially in the works, with original writer Diablo Cody currently writing the script. This news comes 16 years after the first film’s release, which has since found a massive and dedicated audience.
The Official Sequel Update
In a recent interview, director Karyn Kusama provided the exciting confirmation that a follow-up to the 2009 film is moving forward. She revealed that Diablo Cody is actively working on the story.
Kusama shared her confidence in the project, stating that the new story will capture the same spirit as the original.
โI know sheโs working on it right now, and Iโm very excited to hear what comes of it,โ said Kusama. โI know some of the bones of it, so Iโm not going to give anything away, but it sounds fun and crazy like the first film. And I have no doubt that Diablo will do something absolutely incredible with it.โ
This confirmation aligns with previous comments from Cody herself, who stated last year, โI am not done with Jenniferโs Body.โ She emphasized her desire to find partners who believe in the project as much as she does to help bring it to life.
A Look Back at the Original Film
Released in 2009, Jennifer’s Body was directed by Karyn Kusama from a script by Diablo Cody. The movie starred Megan Fox as Jennifer Check, a popular high school student who becomes possessed by a demonic entity. After her transformation, she preys on her male classmates, and her best friend, “Needy” Lesnicki, played by Amanda Seyfried, must stop her.
The film also featured a supporting cast including Adam Brody, Johnny Simmons, J.K. Simmons, and Amy Sedaris. Despite its now-beloved status, the film was initially a box office disappointment and received mixed reviews, which creators have largely attributed to a marketing campaign that failed to highlight the film’s feminist themes and dark comedy.
The Journey to Cult Classic Status
In the years since its release, Jennifer’s Body has undergone a significant reappraisal. Modern audiences have rediscovered the film, championing its smart writing, exploration of female power, and complex portrayal of female friendship. It has since been recognized as a feminist cult classic.
Kusama has expressed her gratitude that the film eventually found its audience, even if it took longer than expected.
โIโm just so grateful that the film managed to find its audience, perhaps on a different timeline than any of us might have expected or hoped for, but Iโm just so thankful that the work continues to speak to people. Iโm just so satisfied by that.โ
The film’s enduring popularity was recently highlighted by a nod in Benito Skinner’s Prime Video series Overcompensating, which also featured a cameo from Megan Fox.
Will the Original Cast Return?
While no official casting announcements have been made, there is strong indication that the leading ladies are interested in returning. Amanda Seyfried has previously expressed her thoughts on a sequel, and Megan Fox has also shown openness to the idea. In a 2021 interview, Fox even suggested the concept could be expanded into a television series.
Kusama also reflected fondly on working with Fox, praising the depth and humor she brought to the role of Jennifer. She noted that Fox’s “secret weapon is sheโs really, really funny, and obviously, whatโs behind that kind of humor is deep intelligence.”
What to Expect from the Sequel
Though specific plot details for Jennifer’s Body 2 are being kept under wraps, the original film’s ending provides a clear path for a sequel. After being bitten by Jennifer during their final confrontation, Needy manifests some of Jennifer’s supernatural abilities. The film ends with Needy escaping from a psychiatric facility and hunting down the members of Low Shoulder, the band responsible for Jennifer’s possession.
This setup opens the door for a sequel that could follow a powered-up Needy navigating a world where she has inherited a part of her best friend’s demonic legacy. With Diablo Cody’s signature sharp dialogue and unique perspective, the sequel is poised to be a welcome return to this beloved world.
