Johanne, a 30-something Norwegian nurse, is back for more holiday dating drama. As Home for Christmas prepares for its third season on Netflix, here is a simple guide to the romantic chaos from the first two seasons to get you ready for the new episodes.
The series follows Johanne, played by Ida Elise Broch, as she deals with family pressure, failed dates, and the search for a real connection during the Christmas season. The show mixes romance, comedy, and family moments in short, 30-minute episodes. Season 3 of Home for Christmas arrives on Netflix on December 12, 2025.
The Story Begins: Johanne’s Big Christmas Lie
The story starts at a family dinner. Feeling pressured by her relatives, Johanne tells a lie that shapes the next two seasons: she claims she has a boyfriend and promises to bring him to Christmas dinner. The problem is, she is single. This lie forces Johanne into a frantic search for a partner with the holiday clock ticking.
She tries different ways to meet someone. She goes speed dating, uses dating apps, and meets people in unexpected places. Her dates include a variety of men:
- Stein: A seemingly nice man whose competitive nature during a ski trip makes Johanne lose interest.
- Bengt Erik: A much older former politician. Their awkward date ends when they run into Johanne’s parents at a spa.
- Henrik: A doctor at her hospital who shows interest in her.
- Jonas: A 19-year-old Swedish student. Despite their strong connection and the significant age gap, they grow close. However, Jonas decides to leave for Bali to study, ending their brief relationship.
As Christmas Eve arrives, Johanne does not have a boyfriend to present. Instead, she brings two unconventional guests to dinner: her roommate’s boyfriend, who works as a hospital clown, and her favorite elderly patient from the hospital. The season ends with a mysterious delivery of 100 roses at Johanne’s door, leaving herโand the audienceโwondering who sent them.
Season 2: New Relationships and Old Flames Return
The second season picks up immediately after the first. The person at the door is revealed to be a delivery person with the roses. Johanne eventually starts a relationship with Dr. Henrik, but it lasts less than a year. She realizes his controlling and overly organized nature is not what she wants.
“She realizes quite late into the relationship that she doesnโt really want to be with controlling Henrik. Heโs annoyingly organized and wants everything to go his way.”
After their breakup, Johanne thinks Henrik sent the roses and goes to see him. She finds he has already moved on with someone else. He also tells her he did not send the flowers.
This season also focuses on Johanne’s family. Her parents, Tor and Jorid, have separated, leaving the family’s traditional Christmas gathering in doubt. Johanne decides to host the dinner herself. In her personal life, new possibilities appear:
- Nick: Her divorced neighbor, whom she accompanies to a speed-dating event.
- Knut: A kind man she meets, but their connection fizzles out.
The most important return is Jonas. He comes back from Bali, older and more mature. He meets Johanne at the hospital where his friend is being treated. It is during this meeting that Jonas confesses he was the one who sent the 100 roses.
Season 2 ends on a hopeful note. After a chaotic Christmas Eve where her family eventually all comes together, Johanne goes to the hospital to see Jonas. They share a quiet moment, suggesting a renewed romance.
Where Season 3 Begins: A Five-Year Jump and New Challenges
Season 3 starts five years after the events of Season 2. Johanne is now 35. The hopeful reunion with Jonas seen at the end of the last season has apparently ended in a breakup.
According to Netflix’s official description, Johanne is single again and trying to avoid feeling lonely by keeping busy. She is helping her siblings, taking care of her father, and has a new leadership role at work.
“Months have passed since her breakup with Jonas. She doesnโt have a boyfriend but keeps herself busy to avoid feeling lonelyโฆ As she throws herself back into the dating scene, she starts to realize itโs not quite the same as it used to be. Or is it Johanne who has changed?”
The central question for her this season is whether she will dare to open her heart to love again after the tough breakup.
