The Spanish romance film Tell Me Softly left viewers with one major question: why does Thiago Di Bianco treat his childhood friend, Kamila “Kami” Hamilton, with such intense anger? The answer is a tragic secret from their past, buried for seven years, that involves a broken promise and a devastating family loss. This hidden trauma is the real source of the painful rift between them.

The movie, based on Mercedes Ron’s popular book and now streaming on Prime Video, follows Kami as the Di Bianco brothersโ€”Thiago and Taylorโ€”suddenly return to her life. Their comeback shatters the calm existence she built and forces all three to confront a shared history marked by a single, life-altering accident. The film’s ending peels back the layers of guilt and blame, revealing the truth behind Thiago’s cold behavior.

The Childhood Secret That Changed Everything

To understand the present conflict, you must go back seven years. As children, Kami and Thiago were inseparable, sharing a bond that included a first kiss. Their friendship shattered during a secret adventure when they accidentally witnessed Thiago’s father having an affair. The woman in the car was Kami’s own mother.

Thiago, understanding the potential damage this secret could cause, made Kami promise never to tell anyone what they saw. She agreed, but the weight of the lie became too heavy. Fearing she would lose her own father, Kami eventually confessed the truth to him. This revelation set off a chain of irreversible events.

Thiago’s mother, Chiara, found herself in an extremely hurt and fragile state, wherein she loaded her kids in her car and drove away in the pouring rain.

Driving distraught and in the rain with her three children, Chiara swerved off a bridge to avoid a deer. While she, Thiago, and Taylor survived, the youngest sibling, Lucia, did not. Thiago tried desperately to save his little sister but failed. Lucia’s death is the central tragedy that haunts every character.

Why Thiago Blames Kami for His Sister’s Death

In the years following the accident, Thiago constructed a clear narrative of blame. He holds Kami personally responsible for the tragedy. From his perspective, if she had kept her promise, his mother would never have learned about the affair, would not have driven away in a rage, and Lucia would still be alive.

His anger is compounded by deep betrayal. Out of everyone involved, Kami was the person he trusted most. Her decision to tell the secret felt like the ultimate letdown. This complex mix of grief, guilt, and broken trust explains why he returns to town treating her with such venom, despite clearly still having feelings for her.

However, the film shows that the blame does not rest on one person. The actual series of events involves multiple failings: the father’s affair, the mother’s reckless decision to drive while emotional, and simply tragic, bad luck. Near the movie’s end, Thiago’s own mother, Chiara, urges him to stop blaming Kami and to forgive, indicating that the guilt ultimately lies with the adults involved.

The Complicated Love Triangle: Kami, Thiago, and Taylor

The old tragedy directly fuels the new love triangle. Thiago’s return as a teaching assistant at their school creates immediate tension. His hatred for Kami is obvious, yet it’s intertwined with unresolved sexual tension from their past.

Meanwhile, the younger brother, Taylor, has always carried a torch for Kami. Unlike Thiago, he is open, protective, and eager to reconnect. As Kami grows closer to Taylor, it intensifies Thiago’s bitterness. A key moment occurs during a school basketball tournament. After a rival sabotages Kami’s cheerleading routine, Taylor comforts her, and they nearly become intimate. Kami stops, realizing her thoughts are with Thiago.

The climax arrives on the anniversary of Lucia’s death. Both drawn to the fateful bridge, Kami and Thiago finally talk. He admits he loves her and asks her to say it back. They share a passionate kiss, but Kami pulls away again, this time because she knows it would hurt Taylor, for whom she has also developed real feelings.

“She says that ‘it’s always been [him]’ from the time they were children. Still, Kami hesitatesโ€ฆ making Thiago question whether she’s in love with Taylor, too.”

The film ends without Kami choosing either brother. She is torn between her first love, Thiago, and the safer, kinder affection from Taylor. This unresolved tension sets the stage for the sequel.

What the Ending Means and What Comes Next

The final scenes show that while some truths are revealed, forgiveness is not instant. Thiago understands, intellectually, that Kami is not solely to blame. His mother has absolved her. However, his heart is still full of resentment, especially when he sees her connection with his brother. The wound is still fresh.

The movie is the first part of a planned trilogy based on Mercedes Ron’s books. A sequel, Tell Me in Secret, has already been greenlit. For viewers wondering who Kami ultimately ends up with, readers of the book series have revealed on social media that Thiago and Kami are endgame. Their path, however, is described as angsty and far from easy.

Tell Me Softly is now available for streaming globally on Prime Video.
