The latest episode of HBO’s campus comedy sees Greg Russo face his past as his ex-wife Elizabeth visits for a dedication ceremony, bringing old wounds and family drama to the surface.

Episode 5 of Rooster, titled “Mr. Razzles,” brings a major shake-up to Ludlow College. Steve Carell’s Greg Russo must deal with the arrival of his ex-wife Elizabeth, played by Connie Britton. The episode, which aired Sunday, April 5, at 10 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max, shows what happens when old family patterns return to campus.

Elizabeth comes to Ludlow for a dedication ceremony of the Elizabeth Stoddard Student Center. Her visit forces Greg to face feelings he thought he had buried. Meanwhile, their daughter Katie (Charly Clive) looks for advice from her mother about her own troubled marriage to Archie (Phil Dunster).

Elizabeth’s Arrival Shakes Up Greg’s New Life

Greg has just started to find his footing at Ludlow after his one-night stand with Cristle (Annie Mumolo). But all that changes when he learns Elizabeth is coming to campus. The history between them is messy. Elizabeth cheated on Greg, which ended their marriage.

At the dedication ceremony, Walt Mann (John C. McGinley) talks up Elizabeth’s achievements. She announces she plans to spend more time on campus. Greg’s phone rings during her speech, creating an awkward moment.

The family walks around campus together. Elizabeth learns that students call Greg “Rooster” and that he has become somewhat popular. She seems surprised by his new role at the college.

Katie Turns to Her Mother for Advice

Katie struggles with her own relationship problems after sleeping with Archie again. She feels confused and reaches out to Elizabeth for help. This is interesting because Elizabeth was the one who cheated on Greg.

“I really love that scene, and what I really enjoyed learning about Elizabeth is that she has a deep love for both Greg and Katie, and she sees them for who they are,” Britton told TV Insider. “She’s very straightforward about who she is, and [tells her daughter], you should be more selfish.”

Britton explained that Elizabeth tells Katie to make sure she is happy. “That’s kind of a revolutionary thing to see a woman say that on TV and particularly a mother say it to her daughter,” she said.

Katie feels guilty about seeing Archie. But Elizabeth admits she is not the best person to ask for advice because she was once in Archie’s position. Katie just wants her mom to tell her what to do, even though Greg is usually the more emotional parent.

Family Dinner Brings Old Wounds Back

Elizabeth, Greg, and Dylan (Danielle Deadwyler) meet for wine and food. Elizabeth mistakes Dylan for one of Greg’s one-night stands. They both deny it. Dylan shares she is seeing someone, though he is not that great.

Things get tense when Elizabeth compliments Dylan’s friendship with Greg. She then throws Greg’s lack of friends under the bus. Greg fires back, saying he ended up with only one friend after the divorce because Elizabeth slept with the other one.

The tension does not ease. After Dylan leaves, Elizabeth and Greg talk about why they broke up and if they can be friends. Greg asks for another chance. But Elizabeth wants to move on. “She wants to cut their losses and know that they did the best they could,” the episode shows.

A Photo Triggers Elizabeth

During their talk, Katie brings up a photo hanging in Greg’s house. The image from their past bothers Elizabeth. She sees it as Greg holding onto an idea of her rather than who she really is.

“I think that it represents a lot to him. But I think it also represents her heartbreak because he’s holding on to this idea of her, literally this picture of her,” Britton explained. “It takes two to tango. For me that photo represents for her how she was always a projection for him. She wanted to really be seen by him. He was never able to do it.”

Elizabeth leaves to meet up with Katie. She cuts the night short after several awkward moments.

Greg Tries to Help the Hockey Coach

Walt asks Greg to babysit the drunk hockey coach. Greg agrees, though he is hesitant. He skates onto the ice and introduces himself. The coach does not seem happy that Walt sent him. But his expression changes, and he admits he is glad Greg is there to support him.

Greg tells the coach honestly that he thinks he can turn things around. Katie and Elizabeth cheer from the stands. But Greg takes a hockey puck to the mouth during warmups. He quickly says he is okay.

After the accident, the family bonds a bit. Elizabeth tells Greg that Katie calls him Mrs. Doubtfire because he is the emotional parent.

Katie’s Guilt Over Archie Grows

Katie feels bad for seeing Archie again. She talks with Elizabeth about it. Elizabeth admits she is not the right person to give advice since she was the one who cheated in her marriage.

Later, Sunny (Lauren Tsai) returns from New York. She runs into Katie and apologizes for Archie’s behavior. Sunny admits she is scared but wants to see how things go with him. Katie feels concerned for her.

Archie faces problems of his own. Someone keeps writing “For Katie” around campus and on his whiteboard. He chases the person but cannot catch them. Walt calls Archie in for a meeting about the situation. Archie almost gets into trouble with a female student who misreads his signals.

What the Cast Says About the Episode

Britton revealed that she joined Rooster very last minute. Bill Lawrence reached out to her the day before they needed her on set. This role reunited her with Lawrence 30 years after they worked together on Spin City.

“The way Bill works is so conducive to just discovery,” Britton told TheWrap. “We were given so much freedom to discover who our characters are in the moment. That helped for us to create the relationships.”

Britton also shared that Elizabeth is different from the warm mother roles she often plays. “She’s not the kind of warm, fuzzy mom that I’ll sometimes be mistaken for,” she said.

She promised that Elizabeth will return in future episodes. “We are gonna see her again,” Britton confirmed. “Every single thing I got to do on this show, I loved doing so much.”
