The streets of Hell’s Kitchen are heating up again, and the second season of Daredevil: Born Again is already asking a big question. With Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon, fans want to know if Charlie Cox’s blind lawyer will ever suit up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The answer, according to the actor himself, is rooted in the character’s loner nature.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for big team-ups, Matt Murdock operates very differently. The new season of the Disney+ series shows exactly why this hero prefers to work in the shadows rather than standing next to gods and super-soldiers.
Matt Murdock’s Lone Wolf Mentality Keeps Him Grounded
Charlie Cox recently opened up about where his character stands regarding the Avengers. He explained that Matt Murdock is a “lone wolf” who likes to work by himself. This trait is a core part of who Daredevil is, both in the comics and in the show.
Cox noted that this tendency makes Matt similar to Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher. Both characters are driven by a personal code that does not always fit into a team structure. However, Cox added an interesting layer to this. He admitted that while Matt would be “reluctant” to join, he would secretly be “absolutely thrilled” and “champing at the bit” to be part of something as big as the Avengers.
Even with that excitement, the reality of season 2 shows Matt pulling away from the larger world to focus on his neighborhood.
A Solo War Against Kingpin Changes the Rules
The current plot of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 explains why Matt cannot focus on global threats. Right now, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is the Mayor of New York City. He has declared martial law and created an Anti-Vigilante Task Force to hunt down anyone in a mask.
Matt is not just fighting a criminal; he is fighting the entire legal system of New York. Episode 4 introduced a major change when Jack Duquesne (Tony Dalton) offered Matt access to significant wealth. This money helps Matt become a symbol of hope for the people, allowing him to fund his resistance rather than looking for super-powered allies.
Because his fight is about the soul of one city, joining the Avengers to fight a cosmic threat like Doctor Doom would pull him away from the people who actually need him.
The Return of Jessica Jones and The Defenders
Even though he might avoid the Avengers, Matt is not entirely alone. Krysten Ritter has returned as Jessica Jones in Season 2, and her presence explains why Matt stays on the ground level. Producer Sana Amanat explained that Jessica’s return is very “personal.” She is not there for a big crossover event; she is there because the fight with Fisk affects her directly.
There are strong hints that Luke Cage and Danny Rand might also return soon, reforming the street-level team known as The Defenders. Matt feels comfortable with this group because they deal with real crime, not alien invasions.
Amanat described Jessica’s role in the show perfectly, saying:
“She brings edginess and lightness – Daredevil can be very dark and dramatic, and she cuts through the BS in a really fun way.”
Fisk’s Smart Game and Release Schedule
One major reason Matt cannot be a public Avenger is Wilson Fisk. Even though the Kingpin knows Matt is Daredevil, he refuses to tell the public. In Episode 2, Fisk explains that revealing a blind man who saved his life is the vigilante would be bad for his image. Instead, he makes Matt a “missing hero” to control the narrative.
