Where the Story Begins and Key Cast

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on author George R. R. Martin’s series of novellas, Tales of Dunk and Egg. The story is set about a century before the events of Game of Thrones and roughly 72 years after House of the Dragon. This places the show in a unique period of Targaryen rule where the dragons are gone, but the dynasty still holds the Iron Throne.

Unlike its epic predecessors, the series aims for a more personal and adventurous tone. It follows the journey of Ser Duncan the Tall, a humble and honorable young knight, and his clever squire, Egg. Unbeknownst to Dunk, Egg is actually Aegon V Targaryen, a young prince hiding his identity. The first season adapts the first novella, The Hedge Knight, beginning their story at a tournament in Ashford.

The series stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (“Dunk”) and Dexter Sol Ansell as Aegon V Targaryen (“Egg”). The supporting cast includes several members of the Targaryen family and other noble houses of Westeros, including:

  • Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen
  • Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen
  • Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen
  • Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon
  • Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, a Dornish puppeteer

Creative Team and Early Renewal

The series was co-created and is executive produced by George R. R. Martin and writer Ira Parker, who previously worked on House of the Dragon. The directing duties for the first season are shared by Owen Harris, who directed the first three episodes, and Sarah Adina Smith, who directed the final three.

In a significant vote of confidence, HBO renewed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for a second season in November 2025, months before the first season’s premiere. Filming for Season 2 is scheduled to begin in December 2025 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, with an expected release sometime in 2027.

George R. R. Martin and the creative team have extensive long-term plans for the story. Showrunner Ira Parker has stated that Martin has provided outlines for many more Dunk and Egg adventures, suggesting the potential for the series to continue for many more seasons if it is well-received.

Fan Reactions and Series Expectations

The announcement of the release schedule has generated noticeable excitement among fans of the Game of Thrones universe. On social media, many are marking their calendars and expressing anticipation for a return to Westeros. Some fan comments highlight curiosity about the dynamic between Dunk and Egg, with one noting, “The kid being Aegon who doesnt want to rule so runs away and meets a hedge knight headed to a tourney”.

The tone of the series is expected to differ from the large-scale political machinations and dragon warfare of its predecessors. Based on the source material and trailers, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will focus on themes of friendship, chivalry, and smaller-scale adventures, offering a different but familiar entry point into the world.
