The new Game of Thrones spin-off series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is just days away from its release. The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s book The Hedge Knight. It follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a young hedge knight, and his squire Egg. The story takes place 100 years before the events of the original series. One big challenge for the team was telling the story from only Dunk’s point of view. The book has a lot of inner thoughts from the main character. But a TV show cannot do that easily. Showrunner Ira Parker says Peter Claffey fixed this problem with his acting skills.

Peter Claffey Uses Body Language To Show Dunk’s Inner Thoughts

The original Game of Thrones series moved between many characters. This new show does something different. It stays with one person the whole time. That means the camera never leaves Dunk. The audience only sees what he sees. But the book has a lot of internal monologue. Readers know what Dunk is thinking. The show had to find a way to show those thoughts without words.

Ira Parker explained this at an HBO press event. He said the team relied on visual language. But that only works so much. Then he gave full credit to Peter Claffey.

“If it wasn’t for Mr. Peter Claffey just coming in every day and communicating so much with his body language and his eyes and his own sense of humor, we never would have been able to get out Dunk’s inner monologue, which is, of course, so important to this series.” – Ira Parker, Showrunner

Parker said the actor brings out Dunk’s heart and humor. Claffey used to play professional rugby. That background helps him with the physical side of the role. But Parker pointed out that his eyes and body movements do the real work.

The Challenge Of A Single Point Of View In Westeros

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has a unique structure for this franchise. It does not jump between different locations or characters. The story stays with Dunk at all times. Parker said this made the show feel personal very quickly. They did not need to try hard to make it intimate. The format did the job on its own.

The team made specific choices to keep this feeling. Parker shared that they avoided drone shots. They wanted the audience to live inside Dunk’s feelings. Every scene connects back to him. There is no break from his experience.

Peter Claffey talked about this challenge in a separate interview. He said packing information into scenes was the fun part. But it was also the main challenge of the whole series. The team could not cut away to explain things. Everything had to come through Dunk.

Claffey’s Comedy Background Helps The Show’s Tone

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has a lighter tone than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. It still has violence and dark moments. But the show finds humor in tough situations. Peter Claffey said this is his favorite type of comedy.

Before becoming a full-time actor, Claffey wrote sketch comedy. He said he started by writing many comedy sketches. He enjoyed it a lot. That training helped him play comedic beats in the show. He could talk with Parker and the directors about adding humor to scenes.

“You can find so much comedy from terrible situations.” – Peter Claffey

Claffey named directors like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers as influences. He talked about movies like Beau Is Afraid and Dream Scenario. He likes the genre of “nightmare comedy.” That is where you feel horrified but also laugh. He believes the high stakes in the series create moments to take a breath. When they watched the episodes back, he was happy to see those funny moments worked.

George R.R. Martin’s Blessing And Warning

The author of the books has high hopes for this show. George R.R. Martin visited the set during production. Peter Claffey shared what happened during a panel at CCXP 2025 in Brazil. Martin told the cast that The Hedge Knight is his favorite thing he has ever written. Then he turned to showrunner Ira Parker and said, “Please don’t mess it up.”

That is a lot of pressure for any team. But Martin seems happy with the final product. Claffey said Martin was very happy with the cast. He was especially pleased with Daniel Ings, who plays Ser Lyonel Baratheon (also known as the Laughing Storm).

Martin also wrote about the show on his blog, Not a Blog. He confirmed he has seen all six episodes. He said he loved them. He called the actors playing Dunk and Egg “just incredible.” He told fans to wait until they meet the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.

Who Is Peter Claffey?

Many viewers may not know the actor playing the lead role. Peter Claffey is 29 years old. He was born on July 28, 1996. He comes from Portumna, County Galway in Ireland.

Before acting, Claffey played professional rugby. He had a contract with Connacht Rugby. He switched careers and trained as an actor. His stage debut came in 2022 at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre.

TV fans might recognize him from Bad Sisters. He plays Joe Walsh, the boyfriend of Becka (played by Eve Hewson). He also appeared in Vikings: Valhalla (Season 3) and the BBC series Wreck. He will star opposite Cillian Murphy in the film Small Things Like These.
