Fans of Game of Thrones have a new look at the next adventure in Westeros. HBO has released a brand new behind-the-scenes image from the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The photo gives a fresh view of the main characters and the setting, building excitement for the show’s premiere in January 2026. This new series will tell a different kind of story from its predecessors, focusing on the journey of a knight and his squire through the eyes of the common people.

The Story Behind Dunk and Egg

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R. R. Martin’s popular Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. The story is set about a century before the events of Game of Thrones, roughly 70 years after House of the Dragon. It follows the adventures of two characters: Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk), a brave but unproven hedge knight, and his young squire, Egg. The show promises to explore a part of Westeros rarely seen on screenโ€”the world of ordinary people.

Showrunner Ira Parker explained the approach to the story, stating:

โ€œWe wanted audiences to feel the weight of Dunk and Egg’s journey not their battles, but their choices that shape the realm.โ€

He also emphasized the show’s unique perspective, adding:

โ€œTo find a totally different version of this world that everybody seems to know so well was very, very appealing. We are ground up in this series, we are starting right at the bottom. We’re not with the lords and ladies, the kings and queens. We have one character and a lot of heart.โ€

Author George R. R. Martin has expressed strong approval for the adaptation, calling it “as faithful as adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for.” He has seen all six episodes of the first season and loved them, praising the actors as “incredible.”

A Fresh Perspective on Westeros

This new series will stand apart from other Game of Thrones shows by focusing on character-driven stories rather than large-scale magical battles. The tone is expected to be more hopeful and grounded.

โ€œNobody’s thinking about magic,โ€ said showrunner Ira Parker. โ€œThis could basically be 14th century Britain. This is hard nose, grind it out, gritty, medieval knights, cold with a really light, hopeful touch.โ€

While the world has seen dragons, the story itself will not feature them. Instead, it is a character piece centered on themes of duty, honor, and chivalry. Martin has confirmed that viewers should not expect dragons, huge battles, or White Walkers. Instead, the series will focus on the personal growth of Dunk and Egg and the bond they form.

Meet the Cast and Characters

The series stars Peter Claffey as the towering knight Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as his squire, Egg. The young Egg is secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen, who is destined to one day rule Westeros as King Aegon V. The cast also includes several other key figures from the realm.

  • Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion Targaryen
  • Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen
  • Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen
  • Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle
  • Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon

The production has taken place in Belfast, Ireland, with a focus on historical accuracy in its sets and costumes. Despite a significant budget, the production team has achieved detailed battle sequences that match the quality of the other shows in the franchise.

When to Watch and What to Expect

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled to premiere on HBO and its streaming platform, Max, in January 2026. The first season will consist of six episodes. For fans eager for more, George R. R. Martin and the show’s creative team will host a panel at New York Comic Con in October 2025, where more details and footage will likely be shared.
