The wait for Invincible Season 4 is almost over, with the hit adult animated series set to return to Prime Video in just a few days. However, fans hoping to hear the voice of Aaron Paul reprise his role as the tragic villain Powerplex will be disappointed. The Breaking Bad star has officially confirmed he will not be back for the new season, and now the show’s creator is shedding more light on the situation.
The Emmy-winning actor voiced Scott Duvall, also known as Powerplex, during the show’s third season. His character quickly became a fan favorite due to his intense and heartbreaking storyline. But when production began on Season 4, Paul made the difficult decision to step away from the role. He recently opened up about why he could not continue, citing the heavy emotional toll the character took on his mental health.
Aaron Paul Says Powerplex Role Was ‘Too Gruelling on My Psyche’
During an appearance on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Paul explained his reasons for leaving the series. He made it clear that his decision had nothing to do with the show’s quality or the people involved. In fact, he remains a huge fan of the series.
“I did a couple of episodes, and then they asked me to come back for the next season,” Paul said. “But I’ve got to tell you, that show, I’m such a fan of. I watch every episode. I love it. But it was just way too gruelling on my psyche.”
Paul described his approach to playing the troubled villain as deeply immersive, which ultimately made the experience uncomfortable for him. He elaborated on why the character was so difficult to portray.
“Powerplex, man, he’s not just messing around. He’s going through turmoil,” Paul explained. “I really put myself in that skin, and it was a skin I didn’t feel comfortable in, to be honest. I didn’t want to do it anymore. The thing is, everyone involved in that camp is amazing. But what it did to me, I didn’t like, so I couldn’t continue.”
The character of Powerplex (Scott Duvall) is a scientist who blames Invincible for the deaths of his sister and niece during a superhero battle. Consumed by grief and rage, he becomes a villain seeking revenge. In one of the most shocking moments of Season 3, Powerplex accidentally uses his kinetic-energy absorption powers to kill his own wife and child during a confrontation with Mark Grayson. This tragic backstory and the character’s constant state of emotional anguish proved to be too much for the actor to return to.
Robert Kirkman Addresses the Casting Change for Season 4
Following Paul’s announcement, Invincible creator and co-showrunner Robert Kirkman spoke with Radio Times about the major casting shakeup. While Paul’s personal reason was the emotional weight of the role, Kirkman also pointed to the practical challenges of working with a star of Paul’s caliber in an animated series.
“Animation is a different animal,” Kirkman said. “In live action, a lot of times, you have to change how things are written to expand roles and things to maintain having an actor stay on for a role. In animation, there’s a little bit more freedom in following the actual story.”
Kirkman acknowledged that while Powerplex’s story is far from over in the comics, the character’s appearances become more sporadic. This made securing Paul’s availability for potentially just a few lines here and there a logistical challenge.
“I think that if you look at the Powerplex character, he’s still present, and he pops up from time to time, but having a real meaty episode that focuses on him, that’s something where you can get Aaron Paul to come in and do a great performance,” Kirkman continued. “But it is sometimes difficult to have that same actor come in just for a scene or two here and there, mainly because of scheduling.”
Kirkman stressed that locking in a high-profile actor for an animation project is very different from live-action, where contracts often secure an actor’s time for future installments.
“It’s really difficult because you can’t lock an actor in for animation and control their availability,” he explained. “So you’re kind of at the whim of whatever movie or television show or other thing that they’re doing, and our cast is filled with massively in-demand actors, and so there are going to be times here and there where they’re just not going to be available.”
While Kirkman’s comments focused on scheduling, Paul’s own statements made it clear that the decision was deeply personal. The actor emphasized that stepping away was about protecting his mental well-being, especially given the dark nature of the character’s arc. Playing a man who accidentally kills his own family was a reality he did not want to revisit.
What This Means for Powerplex in Season 4 and Beyond
With Aaron Paul exiting the role, the future of Powerplex in the series is now uncertain. The character is still alive in the story and appears in later comic book arcs. As of now, Prime Video has not announced a replacement voice actor for the role. It is likely that the show will recast the character to continue his storyline, though no official confirmation has been made.
The departure is notable given the show’s history of featuring a star-studded cast. Invincible boasts a lineup that includes Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson / Invincible), J.K. Simmons (Omni-Man), Sandra Oh (Debbie Grayson), Gillian Jacobs (Atom Eve), and Walton Goggins (Cecil Stedman), among others.
