The first season of the thriller series Absentia ends with a shocking answer to its central mystery. After FBI Agent Emily Byrne is found alive following six years of captivity and is immediately framed for new murders, the true culprit is revealed to be someone from her own distant past. The show, which has recently surged in popularity on Netflix, delivers a twist where the villain’s motive is deeply personal revenge against Emily herself.
The series stars Stana Katic as Emily Byrne, an agent who disappears while hunting a serial killer. She is declared dead, only to be discovered six years later in a remote cabin, struggling with amnesia about her ordeal. She returns to a life that has moved on without her: her husband, Nick Durand (Patrick Heusinger), has remarried, and her son is being raised by his new wife, Alice (Cara Theobold). As Emily tries to rebuild her life and memory, she becomes the prime suspect in a new series of crimes, forcing her to find the real killer to clear her name.
The Identity of Emily’s Frame
The person who framed Emily is Laurie Colson, a crime reporter who has been closely following Emily’s case. Laurie Colson is an alias; her real name is Logan Brandt. The season finale shows that Logan’s quest to destroy Emily stems from a traumatic childhood connection.
Logan reveals that she and Emily were in the same orphanage as young girls. Desperate to be adopted, Emily swapped her personal file with Logan’s. This single act had devastating consequences. Because of the file swap, Logan was selected instead of Emily to become a test subject for a man known as Dr. Shen, who conducted brutal psychological and physical experiments on children. These experiences, which included submersion in water and electrocution, warped Logan into the serial killer who would later terrorize Boston.
โYouโre the first life I destroyed,โ Logan tells Emily, blaming her for the torture that forged her into a monster.
Logan’s partner in the plot was Conrad Harlow (Richard Brake), the wealthy man originally convicted of Emily’s murder. Harlow was another one of Dr. Shen’s test subjects. Together, they kidnapped Emily and held her for six years as part of Logan’s elaborate revenge plan.

The Motive Behind the Frame-Up
Logan Brandt’s motive was not random violence but a specific, calculated revenge against Emily Byrne. She did not just want Emily to suffer; she wanted Emily to experience the same horrors she endured and to be completely destroyed in the eyes of the world.
By framing Emily for murder, Logan aimed to steal the life Emily had builtโher career, her family, and her freedomโjust as she felt Emily had stolen her chance at a normal childhood. The elaborate scheme, which included planting DNA evidence and manipulating witnesses, was designed to make Emily appear guilty of the very crimes she was a victim of, ensuring her total ruin.
The Final Confrontation and Aftermath
The season reaches its climax when Logan kidnaps Emily’s son, Flynn, and Nick’s wife, Alice. She attempts to force Emily into an impossible choice, threatening to kill Flynn unless Emily murders Alice. This leads to a final pursuit in the woods, where Emily is forced to confront the person who took six years of her life.
In their last struggle, Emily kills Logan by drowning her in a lake, finally ending the immediate threat. While Emily saves her family and proves her innocence, the victory is haunted by the psychological trauma of her captivity and the dark revelation of her unintended role in creating her own tormentor. This emotional burden continues to shape her journey in the subsequent seasons of the series.
Absentia originally aired for three seasons, concluding in 2020. The entire series, produced by Sony Pictures Television, became available for streaming on Netflix in the United States starting November 14, 2025, introducing the twist-filled mystery to a new wave of viewers.
