Actor Na In Woo recently spoke about the controversy surrounding his exemption from mandatory military service. He explained why he had remained silent on the matter until now.
Na In Woo’s Explanation at Motel California Press Conference
On January 9, a press conference took place for MBC’s new drama, Motel California, at the MBC Golden Mouse Hall in Mapo, Seoul. Director Kim Hyung Min and cast members Lee Se Young, Na In Woo, Goo Won, and Choi Hee Jin attended the event. This was Na In Woo’s first public appearance since the controversy about his military service exemption began.
In December, reports surfaced that Na In Woo had received an exemption from military service. He initially received a Grade 4 evaluation during his physical examination, making him eligible for social service duty. However, after three years without a summons from the Military Manpower Administration, he reportedly became eligible for exemption because of the delay.
Na In Woo’s agency confirmed the news with a statement but didn’t provide further details, specifically about why he received a Grade 4 assessment. This lack of clarification led to the controversy.
During the Motel California press conference, Na In Woo addressed the issue. He said the reports caught him off guard, and he chose to remain silent to avoid impacting the drama.
To be honest, the articles (about the military exemption) came out while I was filming (Motel California) and I was caught off-guard. I received a call about it after filming was over and it was late at night. Since it was a sensitive issue, I had to make a decision quickly and I chose to remain silent.
Na In Woo also said he didn’t want the issue to affect his public image, as fans appreciate his positive personality. He also addressed questions about his military evaluation, explaining that he couldn’t share the reason for the Grade 4 assessment.
I can’t reveal my personal medical condition but I am speaking candidly now in hopes that people will accept me the way I am.
