A recent dispute between ADOR, the agency behind the popular K-pop group NewJeans, and Shin Woo Seok, the director of their hit music videos ETA and Ditto, has come to light. The controversy centers around claims that ADOR demanded the deletion of all content related to NewJeans’ music videos from the YouTube channel managed by the production house Dolphin Kidnapping. ADOR has since refuted these claims, expressing regret over what they describe as a breach of contract.
Director Claims ADOR Demanded Content Removal
On September 2, 2024, Shin Woo Seok took to social media to voice his concerns regarding what he describes as a sudden and unwarranted request from ADOR. According to his post, the agency demanded that all uploads related to NewJeans’ music videos on the Dolphin Kidnapping and Ban Hee Su YouTube channel be deleted.
Shin Woo Seok claimed:
“It seems there has been a policy change at ADOR following a shift in management. Due to ADOR’s request, all NewJeans music videos and related content that Dolphin Kidnapping had worked on and uploaded, as well as any future planned uploads, can no longer be made public.”
He further explained that the primary goal of the channel was to archive a portfolio, not to generate revenue. The director emphasized that the directors’ cuts were shared purely out of a desire to provide quality content for fans, rather than for financial gain.
Shin Woo Seok also expressed disappointment over the apparent end of collaboration with ADOR, stating:
“We had promised future projects with the NewJeans members, which we can no longer fulfill. I’m deeply sorry to the team who worked tirelessly for months and, above all, to the fans who were eagerly waiting.”
ADOR Responds: Breach of Contract and Miscommunication
In response to the claims made by Shin Woo Seok, ADOR issued an official statement to clarify their position. The agency denied asking for the deletion of all related content, instead specifying that their request was limited to the removal of directors’ cuts that had been posted without proper permissions.
ADOR’s statement reads:
“The director’s cut of the ETA music video that Dolphin Kidnapping Group posted on their own SNS channel is an edited version that includes parts that were previously disagreed with by advertisers, and was posted without permission from the advertisers.”
They further asserted that the copyright of the videos in question belongs to ADOR, making the unauthorized posting a potential breach of contract and confidentiality. The agency added:
“ADOR’s channel operation policy has also not changed.”
This statement clarifies that ADOR did not ask for the deletion of all previously uploaded content, but only for the cessation of posting directors’ cuts.
Impact on Future Collaborations
The fallout from this dispute has cast doubt on future collaborations between ADOR and Dolphin Kidnapping. Fans who had eagerly anticipated more creative projects from the partnership may be left disappointed as the conflict seems to have halted further cooperation.
The incident also highlights the importance of clear communication and mutual understanding in the entertainment industry, particularly when it comes to handling creative content and respecting contractual agreements.
