On August 28, 2024 KST, SM Entertainment announced the removal of Taeil from NCT following revelations that the former member is under investigation for an “unspecified sex crime.” The announcement has sent shockwaves throughout the fandom, leading to a mass outcry and significant backlash from fans.
Shortly after the news broke, fellow NCT members began unfollowing Taeil on social media. Notably, Taeyong went as far as to remove photos featuring Taeil from his accounts, signaling a clear disassociation from the embroiled artist.
Fans React with Outrage
The reaction from NCT fans has been swift and decisive. Many have taken to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express their outrage. In a dramatic show of support for the alleged victim, numerous fans have destroyed Taeil‘s photocards and other merchandise. Some have even set these items on fire, sharing videos and images of their actions online.
“Innocent until proven guilty,” commented one user, while others have voiced their strong stance against Taeil by closing fan accounts dedicated to him.
Taeil’s China Bar, a prominent fan group, also announced its closure in response to the scandal. This move underscores the widespread disapproval and the significant impact the allegations have had on Taeil‘s fanbase.
Mass Exodus on Social Media
The fallout from the scandal is evident in the sharp decline in Taeil‘s social media following. Once boasting over 6 million followers on Instagram, his count has now dropped to approximately 5.2 million, reflecting a loss of over 800,000 followers in a short span.
SM Entertainment and Police Confirm Investigation
In a statement released on August 29, 2024, SM Entertainment addressed speculations of a cover-up surrounding Taeil‘s alleged crime. The agency clarified that both Taeil and SM Entertainment were informed of the charges and the criminal investigation in mid-August. The agency also noted that Taeil was summoned for police questioning on August 28.
The Bangbae Police Station confirmed that a criminal report against Taeil was filed in June and that the investigation is ongoing. Contrary to some internet rumors, the police revealed that the victim is an adult woman, debunking speculation that the case involved a minor or illegal filming.
