The new anime series Akane-banashi is finally arriving this weekend. The show comes from the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump, where the manga written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue has built a strong following since its debut. The story centers on traditional Japanese storytelling art called rakugo, which might be new to many viewers around the world.

Anna Nagase voices the lead character Akane Osaki, a high school girl with a clear goal. She wants to reach the highest rank in the rakugo world, known as Shin’uchi. The series marks a rare move into anime for this specific type of performance art. Studio ZEXCS handles the animation production, with Ayumu Watanabe serving as director.

The first episode will air in Japan on April 4, 2026, at 11:30 PM JST. Global audiences can watch it through several streaming services starting the same day.

The promotion exam takes a shocking turn that no one could have ever anticipated.

The episode then jumps forward six years. Akane is now a high school student. The incident from her father’s exam drives her to chase the same goal. She wants to reach the Shin’uchi rank herself.

What Makes This Show Different

Rakugo is a 400-year-old Japanese art form where a single storyteller sits on stage. They use only a fan and a small cloth to act out different characters. No fancy sets or costumes exist. The performer must change their voice, body language, and facial expressions to bring the story to life.

The manga creator Yuki Suenaga admitted he was unsure if the series could work as anime. He said:

Using the unique expressive power only manga can offer, I’ve portrayed a wide range of rakugo performances. Even I, as the author, often found myself thinking, ‘Can this… even be adapted into anime?’

The voice actors have trained with real rakugo masters. Anna Nagase (Akane) started practicing rakugo under Kikuhiko Hayashiya‘s guidance. Takuya Eguchi (Karashi) learned three rakugo stories for his role.

The series airs on TV Asahi’s IMAnimation programming block in Japan, the same network that broadcasts Doraemon and Shin-chan.
