Amazon MGM has taken creative control of the James Bond franchise, marking a major shift in the 63-year-old series. Longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson stepped back earlier this year, forming a joint venture with Amazon MGM while retaining co-ownership rights. The studio announced at CinemaCon that producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are leading development on a “fresh, exhilarating” new Bond film in London .
A New Era for 007
For the first time since 1962, the Broccoli family is no longer the primary creative force behind James Bond. Amazon acquired MGM in 2021 for $8.5 billion, gaining partial rights to the franchise, but until now, Broccoli and Wilson maintained artistic control. Their decision to step aside shocked fans and industry insiders, as the pair had fiercely guarded the franchise’s direction for decades .
Amazon MGM executives Courtenay Valenti and Sue Kroll emphasized their commitment to honoring Bond’s legacy while introducing new elements. “We are bringing a fresh, exotic new chapter to audiences around the world,” they stated at CinemaCon .
New producers Amy Pascal (known for Spider-Man films) and David Heyman (Harry Potter series) are now overseeing the project. In a statement, they called Bond “one of the most iconic characters in cinema history” and expressed excitement about continuing the franchise’s spirit .
Casting Speculations Heat Up
The biggest question remains: Who will play the next James Bond? Reports suggest Amazon MGM is considering a younger actor, possibly in his 20s, for a story set in the 1950s or 1960s. Names like Tom Holland, Leo Woodall, Paul Mescal, and Connor Swindells have circulated as potential candidates .
Other rumors point to a more diverse casting, with Idris Elba, Daniel Kaluuya, and Michael B. Jordan frequently mentioned by fans. However, no official shortlist has been confirmed, and Amazon MGM has not yet begun formal auditions .
Aaron Taylor-Johnson was previously rumored as a frontrunner, but he distanced himself from the role. Meanwhile, Chris Hemsworth—another speculated contender—attended CinemaCon to promote his film Crime 101, fueling further speculation .
A Fast-Tracked Production
Amazon MGM is reportedly pushing for a 2027 release, aiming to begin filming by late 2026. The studio has fast-tracked development, with writers’ rooms already being assembled to refine the script .
One challenge is resolving Bond’s on-screen death in No Time to Die (2021). The next film may explore a younger version of the character or reboot the timeline entirely .
Potential Franchise Expansion
Under Amazon’s leadership, the Bond franchise could expand beyond films. Reports suggest spin-offs, prequels, or TV series—ideas Broccoli previously resisted—are now being considered. A 007: Road to a Million reality show is already in development, but fans remain divided over whether the franchise should follow a Marvel-style cinematic universe approach .
Daniel Craig, who retired from the role after No Time to Die, has wished the new team well but has no involvement in future projects. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos sparked debate by crowdsourcing Bond casting suggestions on social media, signaling Amazon’s hands-on approach.
