And Just Like That, the Sex and the City revival, will officially end after its current third season. HBO Max and showrunner Michael Patrick King announced the decision, stating the story reaches a natural conclusion with the upcoming two-part finale on August 7 and 14, 2025.
The series, which brought back Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis, explored the lives of Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte in their 50s. Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones, made a brief cameo in season 2 but did not return as a main cast member.
Why And Just Like That Is Ending After Season 3
The decision to conclude the series was made by Michael Patrick King and the creative team, including Sarah Jessica Parker, HBO CEO Casey Bloys, and Sarah Aubrey, head of originals at HBO Max. King explained that the storytelling felt complete while writing the final episodes.
“And just like thatโฆ the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end. While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like Thatโฆ season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.”
The season was extended from 10 to 12 episodes to allow a proper ending. King and Parker delayed the announcement to avoid overshadowing the seasonโs release.
Cast Reactions to the Series Finale
The main cast shared emotional tributes on social media following the announcement. Sarah Jessica Parker reflected on her 27-year journey playing Carrie Bradshaw.
“Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all. I know others have loved her just as I have. Been frustrated, condemned and rooted for her. The symphony of all those emotions has been the greatest soundtrack and most consequential companion.”
Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) and Kristin Davis (Charlotte) also expressed their sadness. Nixon called the experience “a delight from start to finish,” while Davis said she was “profoundly sad” but grateful for the cast and crew.
What Happened in Season 3?
The third season focused on Carrie moving on from Aidan, Miranda exploring new relationships, and Charlotte balancing family life. New characters like Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury) and Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker) had expanded roles.
The show faced mixed reviews, with some fans disappointed by character changes, particularly Mirandaโs storyline with Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez). However, the fashion and nostalgia kept audiences engaged.
Viewership and Legacy
While the show started strong, viewership declined over time. The season 3 premiere drew 429,000 households, down from 463,000 in season 2. Despite this, the series remained a cultural talking point.
And Just Like That premiered in December 2021, 17 years after Sex and the City ended. It followed the original seriesโ themes of friendship and self-discovery while addressing midlife challenges like grief, parenting, and career changes.
No Future Spin-Offs Planned
Michael Patrick King confirmed this marks the end of the Sex and the City universe for now. There are no current plans for spin-offs or continuations.
Fans can watch the final two episodes on August 7 and 14, 2025, on HBO Max.
