Vince Gilligan‘s new sci-fi thriller, Pluribus, has been officially renewed for a second season by Apple TV+ even as its first season continues airing. The creator revealed he envisions the series running for multiple seasons with star Rhea Seehorn.
The renewal confirmation comes just days after the show’s November 7 premiere, demonstrating strong network confidence in the series. Pluribus currently holds a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, who have praised its originality and Seehorn’s performance.
Apple TV+ made the Season 2 announcement through industry publication Variety, confirming the show will continue beyond its initial nine-episode first season. The series was originally ordered for two seasons back in 2022, but the official renewal now confirms the continuation.
Vince Gilligan’s Multi-Season Vision for the Show
Vince Gilligan has revealed he sees Pluribus continuing for several seasons. In a recent interview, he shared his thoughts on the show’s potential lifespan and his collaborative approach with lead actress Rhea Seehorn.
โI’d love to see Pluribus go as long as Rhea Seehorn wants it to go,โ Gilligan told Variety. โI’m really doing it, as much as anybody, I’m doing it for her. She deserves to be the mega star that she is.โ
When asked specifically about how long the story might continue, Gilligan suggested a potential four-season run. โMaybe four seasons. I’m guessing, but who the hell knows?โ he said. He acknowledged that his initial estimates for his previous shows changed over time, noting that Breaking Bad ultimately ran for six seasons after he initially predicted only two or three.
Gilligan confirmed that he already has an ending in mind for the series but remains open to better ideas emerging from the writers’ room. โOne of the most important things I can do in the writers’ room is not be too precious about the ideas. If we come up with a better way to end this thing, we will,โ he explained.
Overwhelming Critical Response to the New Series
Pluribus has generated significant critical acclaim since its debut, with many reviewers highlighting its unique premise and execution. The series currently maintains a flawless 100% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes based on 66 critic reviews.
The show stars Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka, a bestselling fantasy romance author described as “the most miserable person on Earth” who must “save the world from happiness.” The story follows Carol as one of only twelve people immune to a global event called “the Joining,” which has transformed humanity into a peaceful, content hive mind.
NPR’s review described the series as “breathtakingly brilliant,” while other critics have compared its mysterious, genre-bending quality to The Twilight Zone and Severance. The pilot episode has been widely praised as one of the best television debuts of the year.
The Show’s Unique Place in Apple TV+’s Lineup
Pluribus represents Apple TV+’s continued investment in high-concept science fiction programming, joining other successful genre shows like Severance and Silo. The series marks Gilligan’s return to science fiction thirty years after his work on The X-Files.
The show reunites Gilligan with Rhea Seehorn, who previously worked with him on Better Call Saul. Gilligan specifically wrote the lead role of Carol Sturka with Seehorn in mind, creating what critics are calling one of the most unique television protagonists in recent years.
Production on Pluribus takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, continuing Gilligan’s tradition of using the location as a distinctive backdrop for his stories. The series features a custom-built neighborhood set constructed specifically for the show in West Mesa outside Albuquerque.
While Apple TV+ has not announced an official release date for Season 2, production is expected to continue in New Mexico with potential for expanded worldbuilding. The writers’ room for the second season is already active, according to Gilligan.
The first two episodes of Pluribus are currently streaming on Apple TV+, with new episodes releasing weekly on Fridays through December 26, 2025.
