James Cameron is preparing audiences for a shift in perspective with Avatar 3, set for release on December 19. The director recently shared details about the upcoming film, hinting at a more complex portrayal of the Na’vi and the introduction of new cultures on Pandora.
Shifting Moral Dynamics
Cameron told Empire magazine that Avatar 3 will introduce the Ash People, or the Mangkwan Clan, led by Varang (Oona Chaplin). This new group will challenge the simple good versus evil dynamic established in the previous films.
“Varang [Oona Chaplin] is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She’s hardened by that. She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil.”
Cameron explained that the film aims to move beyond the idea that all humans are bad and all Na’vi are good. Both groups will be portrayed with more complexity, showcasing their multi-faceted nature.
“One thing we wanted to do in this film is not be black-and-white simplistic. We’re trying to evolve beyond the ‘all humans are bad, all Na’vi are good’ paradigm.”

Exploring New Worlds and Themes
In an interview with the French newspaper 20 Minutes, Cameron shared his intention to reveal new aspects of Pandora. The Ash People will add depth to the cultural exploration within the series.
“In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds while continuing the story of the main characters.”
Cameron promises that Avatar 3 will continue the story of the main characters while also presenting new worlds and themes. He suggested that the first two films served as a setup for the larger narrative, and the true story begins with Avatar 3 and the subsequent installments.
