“Who made the cut, and who was left out?” This question has been echoing in the minds of K-drama fans worldwide since the announcement of the nominees for the 60th Baeksang Arts Awards on April 8. The prestigious awards, which have been honouring South Korean television and films since 1965, have left some fans disappointed as a few popular names were missing from the Best Actor and Best Actress categories.
Kim Ji Won, currently starring in the drama Queen of Tears alongside Kim Soo Hyun, was one of the notable omissions. She portrays Hong Hae In, a cold businesswoman who learns she has only a few days to live due to a medical condition. Fans expressed their disappointment as she was overlooked for a Best Actress nomination.
Ji Chang Wook, who appeared in two hits this year, The Worst of Evil and Welcome to Samdalri, was another surprising snub. His roles in the action thriller and the romance comedy were vastly different, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Kim Tae Ri, who returned with the horror series Revenant this year, was also missing from the nomination list. After the success of Twenty Five, Twenty One, fans eagerly awaited her next drama. She met all expectations with her main role in the spine-chilling thriller horror, a role very different from her previous ones.
Han Hyo Joo, who had a remarkable year with the cast and crew of Moving, receiving multiple nominations and awards globally for the superhero drama, was also left out. Her performance and chemistry with co-star Jo In Sung were widely appreciated by the audience. She also took on the main role in the action thriller film Believer 2.
Wi Ha Joon, who was a part of two super hit series this year, The Worst of Evil and Gyeongseong Creature, was another notable omission. In The Worst of Evil, he appears as the drug mafia Jung Ki Chul, a conflicting character who, despite being a villain, harbours deep feelings for Eui Jung. In the horror Gyeongseong Creature, he plays the role of Park Seo Joon’s mysterious friend.
Jeon Yeo Been, a versatile actor who has appeared in various roles in the past years, was also overlooked. She shot to fame with the popular drama Vincenzo and took the main role in the underrated drama A Time Called You and the comedy-mystery film Cobweb.
Park Bo Young, who appeared in a very different avatar this year with the slice-of-life drama Daily Dose of Sunshine, was also left out. She plays a nurse in the psychiatry department who is diagnosed with depression after things go wrong with one of her patients. She beautifully and carefully portrays the daily life of a nurse and the difficulties faced by people dealing with mental health issues.
Oh Jung Se, a popular South Korean actor who took on roles in many projects this year including Cobweb, Switch, Revenant and Sweet Home, was also missing from the nomination list. He is known not only for his main roles but also for his supporting and unconventional roles.
While the Baeksang Arts Awards have always been a celebration of talent and hard work, this year’s nomination list has left fans questioning the absence of these deserving actors. As the anticipation for the awards continues to build, fans worldwide are left hoping that their favourite actors will receive the recognition they deserve in the future.
