In a phone call with Korean media outlet Ilgan Sports, he confirmed the news, stating, “It is not fake news.” He also shared his emotional state, saying, “I am not okay,” revealing the depth of his grief.
The news has deeply affected Barbie Hsu’s fans and family. The actress’s recent trip to Japan with her family, which was meant to be a time of joy, tragically became her last. Fans particularly feel for Koo Jun Yup, given the relatively short time they had together after reconnecting after many years apart.
A Rekindled Romance
Barbie Hsu and Koo Jun Yup’s love story is one of rekindled romance. Their relationship first blossomed in the late 1990s, around 1998. They dated for about a year before parting ways in 2000, citing busy schedules and the restrictions placed on Korean entertainers’ dating lives at the time. K-pop artists were often prohibited from having public relationships. DJ Koo reportedly didn’t publicly acknowledge their past relationship until years later, likely due to these restrictions.
Despite the separation, their feelings for each other remained. Barbie Hsu later married Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei in 2011 after a whirlwind engagement, but they divorced in 2021. Following her divorce, her connection with Koo Jun Yup was reignited. They married just three months after her separation from Wang Xiaofei, on February 8, 2022, and had been living together with Barbie Hsu’s children until her untimely death.
