Netflix viewers just finished watching Dan Levy’s new crime comedy series, and that finale left everyone talking. The eight-episode first season ends with a huge twist: Elizabeth Perkins‘ character Annette, the seemingly nice future mother-in-law, is actually the mob boss pulling all the strings. Show creator Dan Levy recently opened up about how this big reveal came together and what it means for the siblings at the center of the story.

The series follows siblings Nicky (Dan Levy) and Morgan (Taylor Ortega) , a pastor and a teacher from New Jersey. Their problems start when Morgan steals a $75,000 necklace from a shop to bury with their dying grandmother. That one bad choice pulls them into a world of grave digging, drug running, and organized crime they never expected.

The Hidden Clues About Annette From The Start

Levy explained that Annette’s role as the crime boss was decided from the very beginning of developing the show. He and co-creator Rachel Sennott knew where the story was heading before they even wrote the first episode.

“As soon as the tide turned on the election, she knew exactly who was going to be at the forefront of that race, and that’s when certain things shifted and she came on board.” – Dan Levy

The creator shared that viewers who go back and watch the season again will notice small hints about Annette. She is presented as a very sharp businesswoman, and her interest in the mayoral race makes more sense once you know the truth. Her son Max (Jack Innanen) is dating Morgan, which gives Annette the perfect way to keep an eye on the siblings and control their actions.

What Really Happens in the ‘Big Mistakes’ Finale

The final episode brings the whole family together to celebrate Linda (Laurie Metcalf) winning her mayoral race. It feels like a happy moment, but the joy does not last. Annette pulls Morgan aside for a private talk.

During this conversation, Annette puts the stolen necklace around Morgan’s neck. She makes it very clear that Morgan will go through with marrying Max. More importantly, she admits that she is the one running the criminal operation that has been blackmailing Nicky and Morgan all season.

Levy described watching Perkins film this scene. The whole crew gathered around the monitor, shocked by her performance. He called her a “gorgeous villain” and admitted she scared him while filming. “Elizabeth is like the greatest, loveliest, sweetest, kindest person,” Levy said. “In that moment, I was aware that not just the character of Morgan, but also the actress Taylor, was like, ‘What is going on here?’ Genuine terror.”

Why Annette’s Reveal Changes Everything About Season 1

This twist completely changes how viewers see the entire first season. Every mission the siblings completed, every person who threatened them, all of it was part of Annette’s larger plan. Characters like Ivan and Yusuf were not independent criminals. They worked for her.

The Florida trip where Nicky and Morgan saw a violent massacre? That was not random gang violence. It was Annette removing competition or settling problems within her own business. The siblings only survived because Morgan’s relationship with Max made them useful to her.

Taylor Ortega’s character Morgan now faces an impossible situation. She can either marry Max and stay close to the crime boss, or refuse and put herself and her brother in serious danger. Either way, there is no easy escape.

The Darker Path Ahead for Nicky and Morgan

Levy made it clear that a second season would be much darker than the first. “There’s no way out now,” he said. The siblings have seen too much and know too many secrets. Even if they wanted to walk away, they have a lot to answer for.

The creator also shared that he already knows how the whole series ends. He has a five-season plan in mind and can picture the final scene. “I know exactly where it’s going,” Levy said. “I really hope people watch it so that we can keep telling these stories, because there’s a lot more to come.”

The show marks Levy’s return to television six years after ‘Schitt’s Creek’ ended. While that show was about a rich family losing everything and learning to be better people, this series takes a different approach. Levy said he kept thinking about how scary it would be to get blackmailed into committing crimes. That fear became the starting point for the whole show.

All eight episodes of ‘Big Mistakes’ Season 1 are streaming now on Netflix. A second season has not been confirmed yet by the streaming service.
