The popular soccer manga and anime series Blue Lock is coming to life in a new way. A live-action film has confirmed its Japanese theatrical release for August 7, 2026. The movie is generating major excitement with the release of its first teaser trailer, key visuals, and the announcement of its full main cast. This project brings the intense, high-stakes world of Blue Lock to the big screen for the first time with real actors.
Blue Lock 2026 Movie Release Date and Global Sales Plans
The film will debut in Japan on Friday, August 7, 2026. It is scheduled for a wide release across roughly 350 screens in the country. The timing is strategic, as it is set to arrive during the international Soccer World Cup, capitalizing on global sports excitement.
While a specific international release schedule for countries like the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India has not been officially confirmed, global distribution plans are actively in motion. The international sales rights have been acquired by Round 12, a sports-focused label from Goodfellas and Mediawan Sport. This company launched worldwide sales for the film at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin in early February 2026, indicating a strong push for a global audience. Given the massive international fanbase of the Blue Lock franchise, a worldwide release following the Japan premiere is highly expected.
Meet the Cast of the Live-Action Blue Lock Movie
The film features a large ensemble cast of rising stars and established actors, led by Fumiya Takahashi as the protagonist, Yoichi Isagi. Takahashi is known for his leading role in Kamen Rider Zero-One. He leads a group of young actors who make up the core players of Team Z, selected through a competitive audition process involving over a thousand candidates.
The full list of announced cast members includes:
- Fumiya Takahashi as Yoichi Isagi
- Kaito Sakurai as Meguru Bachira
- Kyohei Takahashi as Hyoma Chigiri
- Kota Nomura as Rensuke Kunigami
- Yuzu Aoki as Gurimu Igarashi

A major casting highlight is Masataka Kubota joining the project as the mastermind Jinpachi Ego. Kubota, an award-winning actor famous for roles in Death Note and A Man, plays the eccentric and demanding architect of the Blue Lock program.
Masataka Kubota shared his thoughts on the role: “Ego’s words and ideas are biased, but they have a gravity that charms those who listen. When I read the original work, I felt I wanted to accompany him in this proof of his life’s work, of continually questioning human instinct through soccer.”
First Look: Blue Lock Movie Trailer and Teaser Visuals
The first teaser trailer was released on February 7, 2026, during a special production report event. The intense 69-second clip throws viewers directly into the pressure of the Blue Lock facility. It shows the main cast gathered in a stark, prison-like room, suddenly forced into a frantic 2-minute and 16-second countdown game. The rule is simple and brutal: when time runs out, the player holding the ball is eliminated, losing their dream of ever playing for Japan’s national team forever.
Alongside the trailer, a powerful teaser visual was revealed. It shows the 12 main cast members dressed in matching uniforms and suits, standing together with determined, fierce expressions. Behind them, shadowy figures represent the other 288 striker candidates, all competing for a single spot as the world’s best. The visual successfully captures the tense and competitive atmosphere of the manga.
The People Behind the Scenes: Production and Staff
The film is directed by Yusuke Taki, who previously directed the Netflix film In Love and Deep Water and the Disney+ series Land of Tanabata. The screenplay is written by Tetsuo Kamata. The production is handled by Credeus, a studio with a strong track record for successful live-action manga adaptations like Kingdom and Golden Kamuy, and TOHO is the distributor.
A significant factor ensuring the film’s authenticity is the full cooperation from the Japan Football Association (JFA) and the J.League. Soccer scenes were filmed at the real football facilities of J-Village in Fukushima Prefecture. Furthermore, former Japanese national team player Daisuke Matsui serves as the Soccer Supervisor, while ex-national team member Matsui Daisuke is involved in soccer supervision to guarantee realistic and high-level football action on screen.
Yusuke Taki, the director, commented on the cast’s dedication: “Through long periods of practice and harsh soccer filming that demanded reality, their resolve and passion, while battered and bruised, spread to everyone standing on the pitch, and they all began to run clothed in egoism.”

What is Blue Lock? The Story Behind the Hype
For those new to the phenomenon, Blue Lock is a mega-hit soccer manga written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. It began serialization in 2018 and has since sold over 50 million copies worldwide in 24 languages, with a quarter of its sales coming from outside Japan.
The story begins after Japan’s national team suffers a disappointing defeat in the 2018 World Cup. In response, the mysterious and ruthless Jinpachi Ego launches the “Blue Lock” project. He gathers 300 of Japan’s best young strikers in a secluded facility to undergo brutal, selfish competition. The goal is to forge the one ultimate “egoist” striker who can lead Japan to World Cup victory. The catch is absolute: failure means a permanent ban from the national team. The series is famous for its unique psychological depth, intense soccer matches, and its focus on aggressive, individualistic play over traditional teamwork.
The franchise expanded with a critically acclaimed anime series in 2022, which is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. A third season of the anime has also been confirmed to be in development. A theatrical anime film, Blue Lock: Episode Nagi, was released in 2024 and earned approximately $23.3 million globally, proving the series’ strong box office potential.
