The latest episode of Boston Blue delivered an emotional punch for fans of the Blue Bloods universe. The March 13, 2026 episode, titled “St. Patrick’s Day,” saw Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) racing against time to stop a terrorist threat during Boston’s big holiday celebration. But the case hit extremely close to home. It involved the same cartel responsible for the death of his late wife, Linda Reagan. On top of the high-stakes action, the episode also gave viewers a heartwarming update about the Reagan family back in New York with the reveal of Jamie and Eddie’s baby.

The episode opened with the city preparing for its famous St. Patrick’s Day parade. For Danny and his son Sean (Mika Amonsen), the holiday brought back a flood of memories. They talked about how much Linda loved this day. Those happy memories quickly mixed with the pain of her loss. The situation turned dangerous when a volunteer security worker named Connor Flaherty was found murdered near the parade staging area. Connor had been doing his own investigation, trying to stop a possible attack.

Danny, along with his new partner Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her sister Superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson), jumped on the case. They soon discovered the killers were connected to Mano Sangriento, the same Mexican cartel that ordered Linda’s murder years ago on Blue Bloods. The cartel was not planning to attack the parade crowd. Their real target was a teenage boy named Javier Torres. Javier was the son of a Mexican prosecutor who had put cartel members in prison. He had been hiding in Boston with his godmother.

Fahey Uncovers the Credible Threat Against the Parade

The investigation kicked into high gear when Detective Fahey and the team connected the dots. The murdered volunteer, Connor, had actually been onto something real. He had identified a threat but was killed before he could alert the authorities. The cartel brought in a hitman known as Luis Abarca, also called “The Butcher,” to grab Javier during the chaos of the parade.

Danny immediately understood the danger. He told his new colleagues, “Trust me, I’ve crossed paths with these guys many times in New York. I made a lot of noise, did a lot of damage to their business. One of their shot callers had my wife killed. If I’ve learned anything about these guys, it is to never, ever underestimate them.” This personal connection to the case made the stakes incredibly high for the former NYPD detective.

The team worked fast to track Abarca. They figured out that Javier was living in an apartment right along the parade route. Despite their efforts, the hitman managed to grab the boy during the celebration. A tense chase followed. Danny, Lena, and another officer cornered Abarca. With the boy’s life in danger, Danny made the split-second decision to take the shot, killing Abarca and saving Javier.

A Painful Reminder of Linda’s Death

For Mika Amonsen, who plays Sean Reagan, this episode was especially difficult to film. He had to show Sean dealing with grief while trying to enjoy a holiday that his mother loved. In interviews after the episode aired, Amonsen shared that he used his own personal loss to prepare for these emotional scenes. His grandmother had passed away just before filming began on Boston Blue.

“It was really easy to tap into loss of a loved on a holiday,” Amonsen explained. “I just lost my grandmother, we were very close, at the beginning of shooting. It was something that was very easy for me to tap into. And I think for most people, when you lose a family member, those holidays, they just feel different, especially when there was a special holiday that somebody particularly enjoyed.”

Amonsen also credited Donnie Wahlberg for helping him understand the long history of the Reagan family’s loss. Wahlberg, who played Danny for 14 seasons on Blue Bloods, became a mentor on set. “He was a wealth of knowledge,” Amonsen said. “In every scene, we would talk about what the loss was like with her exit and how Sean was after those moments.”

The Silver Family Steps Up

The episode was not all action and sadness. It also showed how the Reagan and Silver families are growing closer. Throughout the day, Sean felt homesick. He missed the big Reagan family gatherings back in New York. The St. Patrick’s Day parade only made him miss those traditions more.

Lena, her brother Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner), and Sarah noticed how down Danny and Sean were feeling. At the end of a very long and painful day, they decided to do something special. They surprised the Reagans with a full St. Patrick’s Day feast, just like the one Linda used to make. Jonah even called Erin Reagan back in New York to get the family’s secret recipe and an Irish prayer to read at the table.

“It puts a great bow on the end of the episode. It makes both Danny and Sean feel at home,” Amonsen said about the dinner scene. “They’re both going through all that pain throughout the episode, being reminiscent of Linda, and then they get to come home and have a group that really understands them. It ties together that this is our new family dynamic. This is our place where we can come to.”

Jamie and Eddie’s Baby Revealed

While the case brought back sad memories, the episode ended with a happy surprise for the Reagan family. Viewers finally got an update on Jamie (Will Estes) and Eddie Janko-Reagan (Vanessa Ray). The couple was expecting their first child in the series finale of Blue Bloods in December 2024. Until now, the spinoff had not mentioned the baby.

During the episode, Danny received a text message from his little brother Jamie. The text included a photo of a baby boy dressed in a St. Patrick’s Day onesie. The onesie revealed the baby’s name: Joe Francis Reagan. The name honors two very important Reagans. “Joe” is for the eldest Reagan brother, Joe Reagan, who died before the events of Blue Bloods. “Francis” is the full first name of the Reagan family patriarch, Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck).

The show’s co-creator, Brandon Margolis, had previously hinted that viewers might see the baby. He told TV Insider there was a “non-zero chance” it would happen in Season 1. The team made good on that promise with the photo reveal. Margolis also said they are working to bring more Reagans to Boston. “Because the audiences showed up and the network was generous enough to give us a second season, there’s going to be more opportunities for Reagans for a whole other season, and it’s something we want to continue to pursue on the show,” he said.

Where to Watch Boston Blue

Boston Blue airs on Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. For those who miss the live broadcast, new episodes are available to stream the next day on Paramount+. Viewers in the UK, Canada, Australia, and India can also watch the show on Paramount+, though availability may vary by region.

The show is now on a short break due to March Madness basketball coverage on CBS. It will return with a new episode on Friday, April 3, 2026. That episode will feature a special guest star. Len Cariou will reprise his role as Henry Reagan, the family’s grandfather, making his first appearance on the spinoff. The episode, titled “Beautiful Broken Things,” will also deal with a drive-by shooting at Reverend Peters’ church and more family drama for the Silvers.

Boston Blue has successfully brought the Reagan family spirit to a new city. By mixing intense police work with the family drama that made Blue Bloods so popular, the spinoff is building its own identity. With the reveal of baby Joe and the promise of more Reagan family visits, fans have a lot to look forward to when the show returns in April.
