A Closer Look at the Show and Its Future
Boston Blue is a spinoff from the long-running series Blue Bloods. Donnie Wahlberg reprises his role as NYPD Detective Danny Reagan, who has taken a new job with the Boston Police Department. He is partnered with Detective Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, who is part of a prominent Boston law enforcement family.
The show has been a strong performer for CBS. After only six episodes, it was announced that Boston Blue has been renewed for a second season. The network stated that the show, alongside another new spinoff, has “won every Friday night in total viewers” since premiering on October 17, averaging around 8 million viewers per episode.
A notable casting change in the spinoff is the role of Sean Reagan, Danny’s son. The part is now played by Mika Amonsen, taking over from Andrew Terraciano who originated the role in Blue Bloods. Showrunner Brandon Margolis explained this was a creative choice to bring a “different energy” to the character for this new chapter.
The episode is directed by a familiar face from the Blue Bloods universe: Bridget Moynahan, who plays Erin Reagan on the original series. She is one of several Blue Bloods alumni who have made guest appearances on the new show.
Episode 9, titled “Collateral Damage,” will air on Friday, December 19, 2025. After that, the show will take a break. The series is scheduled to return with Episode 10 on February 27, 2026. The first season is set to have a total of 20 episodes.
