The future of Bridgerton is becoming clearer, with the showrunner confirming the next two romantic leads for the Netflix series. While fans are eagerly awaiting Bridgerton Season 4, which focuses on Benedict’s story, the show’s creative leader has revealed who will take center stage in the two confirmed seasons that follow.
At the recent Season 4 premiere in Paris, showrunner Jess Brownell offered a stylish and cryptic hint about the show’s future. She wore an elegant suit with two white pocket squares, each embroidered with a single initial: E and F. When asked about them, Brownell directly connected the letters to the upcoming seasons.
“Both characters with the initials on my pocket squares will get seasons in five and six,” Brownell stated. “In what order? I can’t say”.
This confirms that the love stories for Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) and Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) will be the focus of Bridgerton Seasons 5 and 6. The only remaining mystery is which sister’s romance will be told first.
Bridgerton Season 4 Sets the Stage for Benedict’s Romance
Before Eloise or Francesca step into the spotlight, the ton will be buzzing with the romance of another Bridgerton sibling. Season 4, which premieres on January 29, 2026, finally gives Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) his long-awaited love story.
The season is split into two parts. The first four episodes arrive on January 29, with the final four releasing on February 26. Benedict’s story follows a classic “Cinderella” inspired plot. At his mother’s famed masquerade ball, he becomes enchanted by a mysterious “Lady in Silver,” who is actually a resourceful maid named Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha). Benedict, with reluctant help from his sister Eloise, sets out to find the woman who captured his heart, unaware of her true identity and social standing.
This season continues the show’s pattern of not strictly following the book order. Benedict’s story is based on the third novel, An Offer from a Gentleman, but is being adapted after Colin’s (Season 3) and before Eloise’s (Book 5). The show has already been officially renewed for a fifth and sixth season, ensuring the stories of all eight Bridgerton siblings will eventually be told.
Eloise Bridgerton’s Potential Love Story with Sir Phillip Crane
If the series chooses to follow the chronological order of Julia Quinn’s books after Season 4, then Season 5 would belong to Eloise Bridgerton. Her story is told in the fifth book, To Sir Phillip, With Love.
In the novels, Eloise begins a correspondence with Sir Phillip Crane (Chris Fulton) after the death of his wife, Marina Thompson. Viewers have already met Sir Phillip in the series. He is the brother of Marina’s first love, George Crane, and married Marina to protect her and her children socially. Left a widower with two children, Sir Phillip writes to Eloise, a known spinster, and eventually proposes marriage through their letters.
Eloise, feeling lonely after her best friend Penelope marries her brother Colin, travels to his estate to meet him. The story explores what happens when the intellectual and independent Eloise meets a man who is not quite what she expected from his letters. Claudia Jessie, who plays Eloise, was playful when asked about potentially leading a season, telling Deadline, “I wish I could say that I have started working on [Eloise’s story]. That would make me seem like such a professional” before humorously declining to say more.
The show has spent several seasons developing Eloise’s character as a fiercely independent woman skeptical of marriage, setting the stage for a compelling romantic journey whenever her season arrives.
Francesca Bridgerton’s Story and a Historic Queer Romance
The other confirmed lead is Francesca Bridgerton, whose romance is detailed in the sixth book, When He Was Wicked. Season 3 of the show laid important groundwork for her future story. Francesca married John Stirling (Victor Alli) and, in the season finale, was introduced to his cousin, Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza).
This introduction included a significant change from Quinn’s original books. The character of Michael has been gender-swapped to Michaela, played by Masali Baduza. This sets the stage for Bridgerton to feature its first lead queer romance for a season.
For readers of the books, Francesca’s path involves profound grief and a second chance at love. The narrative follows a significant tragedy before exploring a slow-burn romance filled with complex emotions. The adaptation of this story with Michaela promises to bring a new and historic dimension to the Bridgerton universe.
The show has already demonstrated a willingness to adapt and change the source material for television, making Francesca’s upcoming season one of the most anticipated for its fresh take on a beloved story.

The Major Mystery: Which Love Story Comes First?
The biggest question for fans is the order of these two confirmed seasons. Showrunner Jess Brownell explicitly stated she knows the order but cannot reveal it. This has led to widespread speculation.
Some arguments favor Eloise’s story coming first in Season 5. In the book series, her novel is fifth and Francesca’s is sixth, so following that order would be logical. Furthermore, narratively, Eloise has been a central supporting character since Season 1, and her personal journey toward love has been a longer-running subplot. Introducing Sir Phillip Crane earlier could also allow for more setup in Season 4.
However, strong cases can be made for Francesca leading Season 5. The show has already dramatically altered the book order by placing Colin’s season before Benedict’s. They could easily do so again. Francesca’s marriage to John is already established, and her story’s timeline might align better if it follows shortly after the events of Season 3. The groundbreaking nature of her queer romance with Michaela could also be a reason for the show to prioritize her story.
Ultimately, the decision rests with the creative team, and the answer will likely remain a closely guarded secret until after Season 4 has fully aired.
