BTS’ SUGA is reportedly facing a hefty 15 million KRW fine after being caught driving an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol. The incident, which happened over a month ago, is nearing resolution as the K-pop star has been fined without the need for a formal trial.

SUGA Faces 15 million KRW Fine for DUI

On September 10, 2024, it was revealed that SUGA had been fined through a summary indictment process, which allows the court to impose fines for minor offenses based on written documents, bypassing a formal court hearing. The Seoul Western District Court imposed a 15 million KRW fine for his offense under the Road Traffic Act.

According to South Korea’s Road Traffic Act, individuals with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08% or higher are subject to immediate license revocation. Depending on the BAC level, the penalty can range from a 5 to 10 million KRW fine or up to 1 to 2 years in prison. However, if the BAC is 0.2% or higher, the punishment increases to 10 to 20 million KRW or 2 to 5 years in prison.

Reports initially suggested that SUGA’s BAC was 0.227% on the night he was caught driving his electric scooter while intoxicated. However, the police have not officially confirmed this specific figure.

The incident occurred on the night of August 6, when SUGA was found riding an electric scooter home after drinking. He was subjected to a breathalyzer test and taken to the police station for questioning. On August 23, SUGA returned to Yongsan Police Station for further investigation. During this appearance, he apologized to reporters before entering the police station.

Summary Indictment Process

On September 10, the Seoul Western District Prosecutor’s Office, Criminal Division 2, revealed that SUGA had been summarily indicted. The summary indictment process allows the court to handle minor cases, such as driving under the influence, by issuing fines without conducting a full trial.

SUGA has now been sentenced to pay a 15 million KRW fine as a result of this indictment. This process has brought the case close to its conclusion, just over a month after the incident.
