BTS member SUGA has been fined following his involvement in a drunk driving case. The prosecution has imposed penalties without trial through a summary indictment, though the exact fine remains undisclosed. This event concludes over a month of legal proceedings since the incident occurred.

SUGA’s Drunk Driving Incident Ends with Summary Indictment

Korean media outlet Yonhap News reported on September 10, 2024, that BTS’ SUGA was summarily indicted by the Seoul Western District Prosecutor’s Office under Criminal Division 2, led by Chief Prosecutor Chu Hye Yoon. The indictment follows his violation of the Road Traffic Act, where he was charged with driving an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol.

The summary indictment process is a legal method in South Korea where penalties are imposed based on written documentation, avoiding a formal court trial. The exact fine imposed on SUGA has not yet been disclosed.

Details of the Drunk Driving Incident

On August 6, 2024, SUGA was involved in a drunk driving incident. He was riding an electric scooter near his residence in Hannam-dong when he lost control after taking a sharp turn and fell. A police officer nearby approached to assist him and noticed an alcoholic smell, which led to a breathalyzer test. After this test, SUGA was taken to the police station for a brief statement before being escorted back home.

The breathalyzer revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.227%, significantly higher than South Korea’s legal limit of 0.08%, which is the threshold for license revocation. Although police reports never confirmed this exact figure, it has been widely reported in the media. According to the Road Traffic Act, a blood alcohol level exceeding 0.02% can result in fines ranging between 10 million KRW and 20 million KRW.

SUGA’s Apology and Investigation Timeline

Following the incident, SUGA made a public apology. On August 23, 2024, he appeared at Yongsan Police Station for questioning, bowing his head twice as a gesture of remorse before entering the precinct. After further investigation, his case was forwarded to prosecution on August 30.

The latest reports suggest that the long-standing investigation has now concluded with the summary indictment, though the precise amount of the fine remains undisclosed.
