Cara Buonoโ€™s final season as Karen Wheeler on Stranger Things 5 was one of shocking heroics and deep personal resonance. For nearly a decade, the actress has balanced playing Hawkinsโ€™ most famously clueless mom while raising her own daughter alongside the global phenomenon. As the series almost concludes, Buono reflects on Karen’s long-awaited moment in the fight, the unique family she found on set, and how her real-life experience as a mother shaped her most powerful performance yet.

From Wine Mom to Warrior

For four seasons, Karen Wheeler was the comedic heart of the Wheeler household, often blissfully unaware of the supernatural battles her children waged from the basement. Buono herself affectionately dubbed the character โ€œthe epitome of the clueless โ€˜80s momโ€ and crafted a private backstory to explain her perpetual state of obliviousness: Karen was a functioning alcoholic.

โ€œI always said that she always got drunk. We never saw it, but she started drinking wine at 4 PM, and she was always drunk. We just never really saw it,โ€ Buono explained.

This character detail made her explosive hero moment in Season 5 all the more satisfying. In the second episode, a Demogorgon invades the Wheeler home to abduct Holly. Karen, armed with nothing but maternal instinct and her signature wine bottle, transforms into a protector.

โ€œIt was so satisfying to finally see Karen get her big hero moment,โ€ Buono said. โ€œI was laughing reading it, but also kind of emotional, because it felt like everything had been building up to this.โ€

The carefully choreographed fight required multiple days of filming. Buono was so committed to making Karen’s struggle look powerful that she injured her shoulder during the stabbing motion, an injury she later had to explain to a skeptical doctor. The sceneโ€™s emotional climaxโ€”Karenโ€™s desperate command, โ€œStay away from my daughter!โ€โ€”resonated deeply with audiences, particularly parents.

A Real Family On Set

Buonoโ€™s journey on Stranger Things is inextricably linked with her journey as a mother. Her daughter, Esmรฉ, was just a toddler when the show began and is now a teenager. The set became a second home, where Esmรฉ grew up alongside the young cast.

โ€œMy daughter has been coming to the set with me since she was 2, and sheโ€™s gotten to know the Duffers well,โ€ Buono shared. For the final season, Esmรฉ even joined the production, appearing in the background of a barracks scene.

Buono also embraced a maternal role with her on-screen children and their co-stars, earning the unofficial title of โ€œHawkinsโ€™ momโ€ from fans and cast alike.

โ€œI felt like I was their de facto mom, and I would say quite a few of them feel that way, and Iโ€™m really happy about that. I will take that title and be their additional mom,โ€ she said.

This bond was palpable in her scenes. Filming an emotional moment with Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler) in Season 5, Buono noted a beautiful role reversal, with Mike asking his mother to trust him in an adult way.

The Final Fight and a Lasting Legacy

Karenโ€™s heroism wasnโ€™t a one-off. In Volume 2, while severely injured from her Demogorgon fight, she musters the strength for a second stand against a pack of Demodogs threatening Max in the hospital. Buono prepared for this physically demanding scene by doing push-ups to generate the needed energy and focus.

For Buono, Karenโ€™s awakening to the truth of Hawkinsโ€™ horrors adds a heartbreaking layer.

โ€œItโ€™s probably heartbreaking in a very specific way, realizing how much her children have been carrying without her,โ€ she noted. Buono believes Karenโ€™s coping mechanism is to efficiently process the trauma, protect her kids, and adapt.

As the series wraps, Buono took home a poignant memento: the very wine bottle Karen used as a weapon against the Demogorgon, a gift from the Duffer Brothers. She sees the final season as a return to the heart of the show, focusing on the original characters and the themes of family and friendship that started it all.
