The wait continues for fans of the CBS comedy set inside the East Hollywood DMV office. The network recently announced a large batch of early renewals, but the workplace sitcom was not included on the list. This leaves the show’s chances for a second season uncertain.

Spring is the time when television networks decide which shows will continue. CBS has already secured its schedule for the 2026-27 season by renewing ten existing scripted series. Among those getting another season are Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, Matlock, Tracker, and the entire NCIS franchise. With so many shows already confirmed, the space for returning series is becoming very limited.

The Comedy Is Currently on the Bubble

DMV falls into what the industry calls “on the bubble.” This means its future is not yet decided. The show joins the drama Watson as the only two CBS scripted series still waiting for an answer about their fate.

The show had a strong start when it premiered in October 2025. During its premiere week, it ranked No. 9 among all broadcast series with 10.1 million viewers across live and delayed viewing platforms. These numbers were actually higher than its lead-in show, the veteran comedy The Neighborhood. Critics gave the show mixed reviews, with a 65% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Industry reports show that while the show’s same-day ratings have stayed steady, its delayed viewing numbers have dropped. Another sign that has caused concern is that CBS canceled plans to air repeat episodes of DMV in February leading up to its return after the Winter Olympics. Six repeat airings were removed from the schedule.

What a Second Season Could Look Like

If CBS decides to bring DMV back for a second season, viewers would likely see the return of the main cast. The team includes Harriet Dyer as Colette, Tim Meadows as Gregg, Molly Kearney as Barb, Tony Cavalero as Vic, Alex Tarrant as Noa, and Gigi Zumbado as Ceci. The first season also featured guest appearances from Randall Park, Leslie Jones, and Chelsea Frei.

The comedy follows the everyday chaos at the East Hollywood DMV office. The workers handle rude customers, broken machines, and office politics while using sarcasm to get through their shifts. If renewed, the show would continue this workplace comedy format with new situations each week.

Why the Decision Is Taking Time

CBS has a full schedule for next season. The network already has Sheriff Country and Boston Blue set for second seasons. Two new shows, Cupertino and Einstein, have received series orders for 2026-27. There is also a vampire comedy pilot called Eternally Yours in development from the producers of Ghosts. This pilot could take the comedy slot that DMV currently holds.

Another factor working against the show is that CBS is ending The Neighborhood after eight seasons. This opens up a space for a new comedy, but the network might choose to fill it with a different project rather than bringing back DMV. History shows that shows left out of CBS’s early renewals rarely survive. Last year, only The Neighborhood received a final season renewal after being left off the early list, while other bubble shows like FBI: Most Wanted and S.W.A.T. were canceled.

When the Show Returns This Month

Regardless of the decision on a second season, DMV will return to finish its first season. The show will air new episodes starting Monday, February 23, 2026, at 8:30/7:30c on CBS. These episodes will continue after the Winter Olympics coverage ends.

The show’s future will likely be decided in the coming weeks as networks finalize their schedules for the fall. CBS has not yet made any official announcement about canceling or renewing the series. Fans will have to wait until the network makes its final decisions for the 2026-27 television season.
