Charlie Cox, best known for playing Daredevil in Marvel’s TV shows and movies, has surprised fans with his honest reaction to the success of the video game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The actor admitted he feels like a “total fraud” because his voice role only took four hours to record.
The game, developed by Sandfall Interactive, became a surprise hit in 2025. It sold 3.3 million copies in just 33 days and is now a strong contender for Game of the Year. Cox plays Gustave, a key character, but he downplayed his contribution in a recent interview.
Charlie Cox’s Humble Response to the Game’s Success
At the Washington State Summer Con 2025, Cox shared his thoughts on the game’s popularity. He revealed that his involvement was minimal—just a quick voice recording session.
“I don’t mean to minimize it in any way, and apparently the game is awesome. I’m not a gamer, I have no idea, I haven’t played it. My agent asked me if I wanted to go and do a voiceover. I was in the studio for four hours, maybe. People keep saying how amazing it is and ‘congratulations,’ and I feel like a total fraud.”
Despite his short time in the studio, fans and critics have praised his performance. Many say his voice acting added emotional depth to Gustave, making the character one of the most memorable in the game.
Why Fans Love Cox’s Performance
Even though Cox spent only four hours recording, his work had a big impact. Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI) and Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate 3), who also starred in the game, praised his performance.
The game’s success has been a surprise, especially since it faced competition from big titles like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Fans have called Gustave one of the best parts of the game, with many saying Cox’s voice brought the character to life.
“If it was a fraud, why did it hurt so much seeing Gustav?” – JB Buff Bell (Facebook comment)
“Charlie is so exceptional, his performance as Gustave was heartrending and he barely even had time to commit to it. I hope he does more voice work!!!!!” – Fallon Goodman (Facebook comment)
How the Game Became a Surprise Hit
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 mixes turn-based and real-time combat, with a unique art style and deep storytelling. The game’s emotional moments, strong voice acting, and innovative gameplay have made it stand out.
Sandfall Interactive, a small French studio, is now working on updates, including new content and accessibility features. The game is available on Xbox, PlayStation 5, and PC, and is also on Xbox Game Pass.
While Cox may feel like a “fraud,” fans disagree. His role in Daredevil: Born Again keeps him busy, and many hope he’ll return for Spider-Man: Brand New Day after his cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
For now, he remains grateful for the game’s success, even if he doesn’t fully understand the hype.
“I’m so thrilled for the company, I’m so thrilled it did really well.” – Charlie Cox
